Soriano

i thought since his name has come up as possible trade bait,

it would be fun to do a pro/con list on him and get some other

opinions.

Pro's

base stealing speed (obviously)

power at a usual non-power position, 2b, CF?

cheap salary, i believe '04 would be his third year

age, still very young, unlimited upside?

post-season experience

Con's

no plate discipline (shown to whole world in playoffs)

questionable defense

i thought that i would be able to come up with more con's

but for some reason this is all i can think of right now. what do you guys think?

i guess that his age can be both a con and an asset then.

another pro might be that he is a very exciting player

and may increase attendance. should that be in green? :bang

I don't know that he'd increase attendance, but he'd obviously be an exciting player with unlimited potential to watch.

If you moved him to CF, that would open 2B for either Robbie, Miles or Harris.

Then you give either Reed/Borchard/Rowand a shot in RF and leave Carlos in LF.

Hopefully we can dump Jose at SS and pick up a guy like Eckstein.

I'm all for the Soriano for Mags trade if we can pull it off.

He's better than Valentin, that's for damn sure.

I do agree, no Eckstein.

If Soriano is brought in, I dont want another failed second baseman-to-Center Field experiment. Put the kid at second, let him play the position everyday, and quit trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. Its not like we haven't seen plenty of errors out of Ray-Ray and Blockhead Jiminez at the position.

Let me ask this one more time:

He's a converted SS...is he capable of playing SS or only 2nd [or CF]? It would be hard to beat out Jeter...it's not that difficult to beat out our current outspoken free agent...

Just curious and frankly, I don't know what he's capable of.

Forkit!

soriano is crap.... leave him be in ny or somewhere else.... if youre gonna give up maggs, get s player that is at least more decent, pitching even

OK, heres Alfonso Sorianos first three seasons:

BATTING STATS

Year Team G  AB  R    H  HR RBI BB  SO SB  CS  OBP  SLG  AVG
1999 NYY   9 8   2     1  1   1  0   3  0   1 .125 .500 .125
2000 NYY  22 50  5     9  2   3  1  15  2   0 .196 .360 .180
2001 NYY 158 574 77  154 18  73 29 125 43  14 .304 .432 .268
2002 NYY 156 696 128 209 39 102 23 157 41  13 .332 .547 .300
2003 NYY 156 682 114 198 38  91 38 130 35   8 .338 .525 .290
TOTAL   501 2010 326 571 98 270 91 430 121 36 .322 .502 .284

And heres Magglios first 3 seasons:

BATTING STATS

Year Team G   AB   R  H  HR RBI BB SO SB CS  OBP  SLG  AVG
1997 CHW  21  69  12  22  4  11  2  8  1  2 .338 .580 .319
1998 CHW 145 535  70 151 14  65 28 53  9  7 .326 .415 .282
1999 CHW 157 624 100 188 30 117 47 64 13  6 .349 .510 .301
2000 CHW 153 588 102 185 32 126 60 64 18  4 .371 .546 .315

Yeah, I can see what you mean...total crap in that...and the fact that he is 25 years old, wow, the kid has no future in the MLB

Con. Maggs is simply too much to give up for Soriano. Money can't be the equalizer. If a trade is made for those two principals, Sox need more. Another reason I don't like it is that I want to see Willie Harris at second, and he doesn't cost much either. Let Steinbrenner solve his own problems without us giving him Maggs, who will be in his contract year and have plenty of incentive to have a big year. We signed that $14 MM deal, so let's live with it. We had Maggs on the cheap for a few years, too.

Here's My Pro's and Con's to both players.

Soriano:

Pro's

-Can hit for avg

-Better power numbers then Magglio (Already)

-Better power potential then Magglio (This guy has had 40/40 and could do 50/50)

-Superior speed to Maggs

-Better athlete then Maggs

-13 million cheaper then Maggs

-4 years younger then Maggs (25)

-Had only 8 fewer RBI's then Maggs, despite hitting in the leadoff spot (Sor-91)

-Provides production in a position that it isn't expected from (cf/2nd).

Con's

-Plate Discipline

-Shaky defensively at 2nd

Magglio:

Pro's

-Can hit for avg

-Has a decent eye

-Plays good defense in right

-Good Attitude

Con's

-14 million; FA at end of the season

Basically I think both are comparable players. If given the option I'd take Soriano over Magglio in a heartbeat because he's only going to get better while Magglio has reached a peak, although its a very good peak. People can say Soriano had a down year, but .291, 38 HR, 91 RBI, 35 SB is pretty damn impressive to me. Stick him in the 2 or 3 hole with some good OBP guys in front and look out.

Did I mention that you would have him locked up long term and he'd cost a whole lot less then Maggs, meaning the Sox could still find a replacement for Maggs and have quite a bit of dough to invest in pitching.
