Texsox
In was at the inaugural game last night. Imagine 5,500 fans and about 300 know a high stick from a highball. 85 degrees outside and it's not the Stanley Cup finals. I saw a XXL Blackhawk Roenick jersey on a guy who was stretching it waaaay out. Still it looked good. It was better than decent hockey with almost everyone waiting for the fights. I put the play at better than college, but under the IHL. The CHL has an interesting tie breaker format. Step 1. 5 minutes of 4 on 4 hockey Step 2. 5 penalty shots per team Step 3. I have no idea we lost 2-1 in the second tie breaker. Key moments of cluelessness "why do we only have 4 players out there and they have 5?" after they just announced 2 minutes for holding "why do they keep playing that Art's Automotive Icing commercial and bringing the ball thingy back to the other end" "What! it's not over; they play another 20 minutes?" Part 1 "What! it's not over; they play another 20 minutes?" Part 2 "What the hells an overtime? I want to go home now. You promised me this would be fun" The guy behind me pretending to be a hockey expert to his girlfriend. "That's a slapshot, look another shift change, that's the Zapruder." Finally I said. "That was a wrist shot, its a line change, and Zapruder filmed the Kennedy assasination, that's a Zamboni. Named after Frank Zamboni who invented the thing." Finally we're down to our last penalty shot in the tie breaker. We're losing 2-1. If he makes it, we don't lose (what happens I still don't have a clue) if he gets stopped we lose. Myself and about a dozen guys (all seemingly wearing NHL apparel) stand up and start cheering. People are asking why were standing This is going to be a long season. On the plus size, $16 tickets put me in about the 15 row, at the red line. Parking was $4 and beer was $6.50. 2 out of three isn't bad but $6.50 for Bud :fyou
The Critic
"...the BALL THINGY..." EXCELLENT!!! Yeah, you might want to bring earplugs to the games, to drown out the "fans". To be fair, though, I have heard a TON of similarly stupid things from people at the UC and Stadium over the years, even from people wearing $200 authentic Blackhawk jerseys! ...never heard THE BALL THINGY said at the UC though... I love that...
Texsox
At least at the stadium I could bring my radio and listen to the broadcast. Guess what no radio play by play for the Killer Bees. I do admit the jerseys are pretty cool. They had special ones made up for this Halloween game. I've met most of the front office. Great group of guys. Mostly Canadians COLOR=green]who would have thought[/color] They also played the Canadian Anthem. Let me see . . . Corpus Cristi Ice Bats vs. The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees and they play Oh Canada. Half the crowd was looking around asking what the hell is that? Of course when was the last time you saw a Mexico Flag at a Hockey Arena? That was cool. One thing that will really help this franchise is the popularity of soccer here. The fans where patient enough to appreciate good passing and the beauty of good shots and saves. For that I'm grateful.
southsider2k5
It sounds like the stories about trying to educate the fans in Nashville after getting a hockey team.
Texsox
One really nice thing is with only 5,600 seats you can't get a bad seat. Anybody remember those last few rows way in the corner at the Stadium?
sox4lifeinPA
Tex, how far is that from College Station? It sounds like a pretty good knee-slapping time. Zapruder...hhhhhhhhhhhha!
DBAHO
Has any1 else seen the movie Hardball with Keanu Reevs, and he's tryin to sell some BlackHawk tickets to a Pizza Chef, and the Chef says, "The only thing black at a blackhawks game is the puck." Let's bring an expansion team down to Australia so I can become GM.
Texsox
Tex, how far is that from College Station? It sounds like a pretty good knee-slapping time. Zapruder...hhhhhhhhhhhha! How far? Have you seen Planes, Trains, and Automobiles? The stadium is literally less than 10 miles from the border. From where you are at it would probably be a trip over to Southbound 35 (good Pat Green tune) to 37 then south on 281. I can get to San Antonio in about 4 to 4.5 hours so that would be a good estimate. I'm thinking you could also pick up 77 South off of 59 and cross over in Kingsville to 281. I haven't made the trip to College Station directly from here. I've always had to go via. Houston. Is A&M going to slow down OU? In the same league are the Ice Bats in Austin, the Corpus Cristi Ice Rays both a little closer. The CC Ice Rays sell out almost every game. They are getting a lot of community support. The other post mentioned the only think black . . . There has been at least 1 black - Hawk. I forget his name.
