Currently 20th, top of the bottom third from bottom of the bottom. One quote I found interesting because I forgot how good we once were.

Was it BA who had them 12th?

Just in general, 20th feels a little low, MLB.com included Quero in their top 100 last time out so counting Schultz and a very high performer in Montgomery, they have at least 3 top 100 prospects including a top level guy. That kind of top to your system seems like it pushes teams closer to 15th.

So Quero is a top-100 prospect (86) in AA at 20 years old.  And while Ky Bush hasn't shown much yet, Giolito has been terrible since the trade (1-3, 8.14 ERA, 1.57 WHIP, .289 AVG).  Lopez has been pretty good, but is a bullpen guy, and he wasn't the big piece in the trade.  That Angels' trade was questionable from an Angels' perspective when it happened, but it looks real bad for them right now.  Yesterday highlighted how bad it was as Giolito took the loss giving up 4ER over 6 innings, 7 hits (including a 2-run HR), 2 walks and striking out only 5, while another pitcher traded at the deadline, Jordan Montgomery (for whom the Rangers gave up zero top-100 prospects), got the win going 6 innings giving up only 1 run on 6 hits with no walks and striking out 9.  Yikes.

I’d agree, I think they’re much closer to the middle than they have them. Eder and Ramos alone are both fringe top 100 guys.

Well, the obvious problem is that we couldn't build a sustainable winner with the #1 farm system.

So why would now technically having what is the textbook definition of a mediocre system lead to any better results, ultimately?

They swapped the #1 farm system for a consensus favorite to win the division a couple years later. 

The process seems solid, the execution was bad.

Execution was terrible. Injuries didn't help for sure, but the minors had zero depth and they made terrible free agent signings. This team with some smart signings probably beats Oakland in 2020, gives a much better series to the Astros in 2021, and wins the division last year.
