Quin
I mean, we're having articles on everything else? So can we have something positive? https://www.cbsnews.com/chicago/news/minnie-minoso-academy-bridgeport-school-renamed/ 4

Tnetennba
I had heard that this was in the works and am quite pleased to see that it has indeed happened. What a wonderful way to pay tribute to Minnie! For those who don't know, this school just blocks from the ballpark, diagonally across from Grandstand on 35th.
wegner
A wonderful man and legendary White Sox. Terrific news.
South Side Hit Men
We used to park near that school and walk to Comiskey Park, pre City/Jerry money grab days. Convenient for stops into McCuddy's with my grandfather pre/post game. Hope the kids enjoy the change and learn about Minnie's history in beisbol and his Medias Blancas. cuban_sammiches
This is great. Was the "ñ" changed later? Growing up, i always thought it was "Minoso."

My guess would be that it was mostly a "1950s newspapers didn't use tildes a lot" thing to begin with, then stuck. It's definitely a more recent widespread adoption as a pronunciation aid - so people pronounce his name like how he did and his family do: Min-yo-so vs. Min-oh-so.
oldsox
Bob Elson used to give it the Spanish pronunciation back in the 50's. 1

palehose1
Well deserved. Both Minoso and Pierce played before my time but they were the two nicest baseball players I ever met. Both were White sox Ambassadors for years. Minnie was great with kids, very sincere. Edited August 18, 2023 by palehose1 spelling

No, there’s an Air Force high school or something directly next to the park. You could literally hit the park with a rock from it.
