Passan just eviscerated the Sox & Reinsdorf on BT. He said the Sox "let you down because that's what the White Sox do" and said the rebuild failed because "they are in the 3rd biggest market yet are one of 3 teams to have never given out a 9 figure contract"

What is BT?

Labels them the most disappointing team of the last 5 years, says that the worst prediction of his career was saying this team could win the 2021 World Series.

That's not why the franchise sucks.  Passan is as shallow as Lake Erie.

His point is JR refuses to pay for elite top-of-the-line, game changing talent and that certainly has played a part in their situation in my opinion.

It's  the Sox, Oakland and Kansas City that have never done so.

That's some company the Sox are keeping isn't it?

If he did how many of them would regress?  There's definitely something not right.

Not acquiring elite talent in their prime is part of the problem. One of many. Jerry is the reason why this franchise sucks, and his refusal to pay up for prime FA is just one manifestation of his ass-backwardness.

This is literally part of the strategy. When you acquire guys in their early to mid 30s, they are cheaper. Relief pitchers are also cheaper.

Older players are cheaper because other teams recognize the risk of the player falling off, sometimes suddenly, with age.  Keuchel, Lynn, Grandal, LaRoche, Cabrera. These guys had high likelihood of hitting walls in age. The White Sox took those gambles.

And relievers - they’re up and down every year, sometimes luck/BABIP, sometimes because 80 outings a year takes a big toll on an arm. The guys who get big contracts are often coming off of good years, so they're set up to take a step back just based off of luck.

Disagreed. He only had a 2 minute segment on it, but he goes through TLR and not adding top tier FA talent. He's clearly talking about being able to add a Harper or Machado, then failing to do so.

I mean, if you want a catch all in terms of why the rebuild failed, he could tell you too. Not sure why you're going at Passan who is as fair as they come.

Witt Jr. will break that so it will only be Oakland (moving, deliberately alienating their existing fanbase) and the Sox...and the royals are going to have that new stand alone stadium and entertainment district.

Which is something in Hahn's favor. A lot of people thought that was a WS level team. Two years down the road I'm more inclined to blame Tony and his decision to leave the locker room to the players expecting them to regulate themselves.

Passan has probably spent 6 minutes watching the White Sox this year.  We could write a book on the causes of the white sox failure, and he thinks it's because no 9-figure contract signing.  He's a dope.  So, if we had signed Stanton for 9 figures, and Soso for 9 figures, and one of the Met pitchers for 9 figures, would we be winning?  No.  His 9-figure cause is way too simplistic.  He's on TV working for ESPN.  That whole network is full of dopes.

You've never seen him go after the Shawnee Mission School Board, lol.

He is meticulously prepared when he needs to be, and passionate.

When he was with Yahoo Sports, he was always one of the strongest, most knowledgeable writers.

The no $100 million contracts is simply an easy sound bite because it's a very salient point...there wasn't any time for the more subtle discussion of why so many managers/clubhouses failed in the last decade and the critical role of the Cuban players (Moncada, Grandal, Abreu, Robert) in NOT finishing off the rebuild.

You could just have easily blamed the lack of Dominican connections going back to Dave Wilder/KW, etc.  It's STILL an ongoing weakness.

Or the lack of any internal starting pitching development after the Danks/Floyd and subsequent Sale/Q years...

We could easily come up with 15-20 different reasons.

Balta's attempted it previously I'm sure.

McGuffey has also said numerous times on the podcast the Sox refused to finish the rebuild and specifically mentioned Hahn wanted to sign some "nine figure guys" (aka superstars) and was told no.

The Sox failure IMO, has been their inability to develop their own. I've posted this before, the last Sox second round pick that put up at least a 2.0 WAR for the White Sox was Terry Forster. He was drafted over 50 years ago.

They would have had two more if it weren’t for stupid trades.

Jeff Weaner declined their second round offer in 1997 and went with the Tigers, R1 14th in 1998.
