flavum
Reds, Marlins, Giants, and Dbacks all 70-67 with 25 left. The Reds are 1-1 in the final 25. Dbacks have a losing season series vs the other 3, so they’ll need to be one game better than all of them. Cubs are +3 but hopefully they blow it. They play the Giants and Dbacks this week. Harry Chappas
Look at those rosters. Doesn't take much to be in that race. With that being said, how the Padres, Mets and Cards not sniffing the playoffs is something.

Funny, I still remember and cherish the 1978 Bucky Dent game, Reuss vs. Nolan Ryan a couple years later. Braves vs. Giants in 1993. Sox fans remember fondly they blackout game in 2008. All of that was flushed down the toilet expanding playoffs from four division winners to the 12-16 team bullshit playoffs of the past few seasons. Could have a final few weeks that really matter in both AL divisions, and an assured battle of the titans between the Braves and Dodgers, clearly the two best teams. Interest in the sport is declining because of the greedy Reinsdorf money grub of claiming "meaningful September games", when nobody across the country gives a rats ass about this seeding musical chair bullshit. The 162 game season was called a championship season for a reason. Now it's garbage like the other three pro sports, and college basketball, allowing any team with a pulse to claim their playoff participation trophy, and downgrade the World Series to not a contest among the best over the long season, but a contest between who was hot and healthy over a couple weeks in October. When seasons and championships mattered, baseball drew over 40 million viewers each game. Today, they get 10-12M with double the American population. caulfield12
2001/2002/2004 all had numbers in the 30 millions or close. 2001 peaked at 39 million for Game 7, but the rating/share was 23.5/34. Surely the audience has become more fragmented when comparing cable and satellite options versus what was once just 2-3 national television channels in CBS NBC then ABC. It's much more relevant to compare the NBA and MLB based on length of series and the singular marketing phenomenon which are the Super Bowl ads and half time performance. The NBA is less profitable but arguably more popular but MLB wins the revenue battle by $14 vs. $12 billion. NFL at $25 billion nearly doubling both leagues

Your thinking is outdated but hopefully it doesn't get to the point where increased playoff spots means you really have to be bad to miss the offseason. Baseball is following what the NFL did. This has become an interesting month for many teams and their fans. I wouldn't want to change that.

Baseball is following what the NFL did. This has become an interesting month for many teams and their fans. I wouldn't want to change that. Wanting teams barely over .500 fight to negate an 162 game season for a couple weeks. It is nearly as sad and about as meaningless as the entire college basketball season at this stage. May as well make every season 60 games like 2020. A meaningless regular season with players getting 37 cents on the dollar. The Sox should play the Cubs 30 at home, 30 on the road, and let both make the playoffs as long as they are within 10 games of .500. Europeans don't stand for this crap when it comes to their domestic leagues. One Champion, determined entirely within the season. Their Champions League could use reform, but they do it right in each country and will continue to do so as long as the absolute garbage American owners don't get their way and flush the integrity of the game down the toilet like they did here. 1969-1993 MLB Format (16 teams in each league, two eight team divisions post expansion): 12 X 7 = 84 Intra-Division and 10 X 8 = 80 Inter-Division for 164 total games. Opening Day = First Monday in April, Game 164 Last Sunday in September. Division Ties = 1 Game Playoff Monday (Home Team = Team With Better Head to Head, second TB Better Intra-Division, third TB Better Run Differential). League Championship Series 2-3-2 = (Wednesday & Thursday) - (Saturday, Sunday, Monday) - (Wednesday & Thursday). LCS Weekday Game = 4 PM EDT / 1 PM PDT. LCS Weeknight Game = 8 PM EDT / 5 PM PDT. LCS Early Weekend Game = 3 PM EDT / Noon PDT. LCS Late Weekend Game = 7 PM EDT / 4 PM PDT. World Series 2-3-2 = (Saturday & Sunday) - (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) - (Saturday & Sunday). World Series Weeknights = 8 PM EDT / 7 PM CDT / 5 PM PDT. World Series Weekend Games = 3 PM EDT / 2 PM / Noon PDT. All Star Game the lone other interleague game. People will finally care about watching the ASG again and the WS again. Edited September 19, 2023 by South Side Hit Men
