He was the best pitcher out there on waivers. I mean, we got this answer quite publicly. The answer is yes, no one in baseball was willing to deal with him. Bob Sacamano
It’s been refreshing seeing starting pitchers goes 5+ consistently in the playoffs this year rather than the plug being pulled around 3-4 innings (if that even).

The cost was going to be something like $800K per start (if you added in the buyout/mutual option situation)...and he'd only had that ONE start before the deadline to make a judgment upon, not to mention the PR hit and/or clubhouse and media distraction for a playoff contender. Opportunity Cost. Not worth it. Edited October 25, 2023 by caulfield12

Carroll gets the advantage there, too, but natural ability there's hardly any daylight between them. Carroll's certainly the more complete player and more fundamentally-sound but even he throws to the wrong base at times trying to make the highlight plays. In some ways, finding a catcher like Moreno has been just as challenging, if not moreso. Ketel Marte's name comes up (or came up practically every year since 2019, but that ship has obviously sailed along with Jazz Chisholm for OF/2B. Of course, the other hit that stings a bit was NOT going after Alek Thomas when it should have been a slam dunk...but the timing with his father and management was not meant to be apparently. At the very least, he would taking Colas' spot in RF. Edited October 25, 2023 by caulfield12
caulfield12
Huge outs there from the DBacks' bullpen. If there was ever a "hero inning" opportunity, that was it. We'll see if Harper gets another shot bottom of the 9th against Sewald.

chw42
Phillies could have won this in 5 had their bullpen held a 4 run lead with 9 outs to go.
greg775
I just turned the game on to see two Phils have no chance on strike three in the dirt. Modern baseball. HR or K. The second out of the inning was flat out embarrassing, guy swung at a pitch that fell 3 feet in front of the plate.
chw42
Whenever someone tells you it's not worth making the playoffs next time...just remember an 84 win Diamondbacks team with 2 good starters and 3 good position players ended up making the World Series.
chw42
Manfred must be dreading the idea of a Rangers Diamondbacks World Series. It's probably the 3rd worst matchup scenario after the 2 Florida teams and Minnesota vs. Miami.

South Side Hit Men
It’s nice to know a team can recover from a Tony La Russa as president of baseball operations within 6 years. Recovering from Jerry / Boyer / Getz et al will take significantly more effort, but it’s possible within a decade assuming Reinsdorfs relinquish any role. Since 162 games don’t matter, perhaps Manfred can replace the two league “champions” determined over seven games with a new Commissioner selection Final LCS. Autumn Dreamin
The Rangers and Dbacks had a cumulative 102 wins in 2021, which is fewer than the Braves alone had this season.
chw42
The Rangers and Diamondbacks pretty much just proved that spending big on your bullpen is not a wise allocation of your assets. Arizona's bullpen was trash until September. Texas didn't care about their bullpen coming into the year and didn't upgrade it until the trade deadline with Chapman.
