Anyone know how long Crochet and Kopech would need in minors to reclaim a year of control?

Per FanGraphs, Crochet has 3.027 years of MLB service time, Kopech 4.041.

Both will remain arbitration eligible from this point forward until they reach 6 years of service time, and both players have 3 years of minor league options available.

Once a player reaches 5.0 years of MLB service time, they must consent to being optioned.

He’s 3.028 service time and typically you need to hold a guy down 15 days to ensure they don’t a full year (172 days) since the season is around 187 days long.  As such, we’d roughly have to hold him down for a month and a half, which is an absolute no-brainer.

Kopech has 4.041 years of service time and Crochet is at 3.028. 172 days equals a year a service time I believe, so you’d be looking at probably around 6 weeks. But I don’t believe either one is heading to AAA outside of an injury rehab stint.

I feel like Crochet has a solid chance.

If they were smart about his development they would, but every indication seems that they are chasing a quick fix 'retool' and will try to maximize his innings in the bigs.

If he averages 4 innings, depending on your innings limit, there seems like a lot of season could be left.

That's why they have all those guys like Keller Toussaint Deivi Garcia etc. stacked up behind...and likely another final addition or two, either FA signings or waiver claims, in the final two weeks.

Crochet and Kopech piggy backing each start is one certainly possibility...or flipping positions as the season goes on to limit Crochet's innings pitched totals.

I was also thinking Tanner Banks, although lefty-lefty wouldn't be ideal.

Banks, despite the AAAA reputation, has been effective pretty much every season he's pitched in pro ball.  He's never had a WHIP above 1.4.  He has 100 pro starts.  Now his FIP was a tad high last year, I guess because he doesn't have high K totals.  And what I like best is that he minimizes the walks.

Not a bad idea....as Hill is more of a specialist.

Then you have Berroa and Iriarte as well that they might attempt to stretch out (obviously Berroa has already gotten hurt, but upon his return)...they're just going to have to throw lots of darts against the wall and see which ones can stick, simple as that.

Cease with two strikeouts in the first...97.2-97.4 with fb slider at 86-87.

Curve around 80ish.

Are the Padres at home? We were told their gun is slow by 4 mph so that would mean Cease is throwing 101.

Somehow I would dare to say the technology in Korea in a domed stadium is 5x more accurate.

OTOH Sox games all spring long haven't even had live game data on the MLB Gameday app.

Just gave up a homer.  Fastball down just a tick.  Time zone adjustment not very fun...always the worst on second day.

Out after two.  30 pitches.

Team Cy Young will be ... Dylan Cease

"Cease’s arrival does two crucial things for the Padres’ rotation. First, it stabilizes the front end. Both Joe Musgrove and Yu Darvish appear healthy, but their 2023 seasons ended early due to injury. Cease, meanwhile, is a frontline arm who has made his full contingent of starts in each of his four full seasons.

“It’s a power repertoire,” said Padres general manager A.J. Preller. “But power with durability.”

Second, Cease mitigates the risk at the back end. Michael King’s transition to the rotation is easier in the No. 4 spot. Meanwhile, the rotation race is suddenly a battle for one place instead of two.

On top of that, Cease is just … good. He struggled last season, but playing in front of a much better defense in San Diego, here’s guessing that Cease will look more like the pitcher who finished runner-up in AL Cy Young voting in 2022."

Padres are going to trade Cease at the deadline for a better return when they are out of contention.

Well, Snell to SF doesn't help as that's the first or second toughest division in baseball.

Obviously depends on offers, who's the GM assuming Preller's job is on the line...and any of their pitching prospects looking like they would be ready for 2025.

Does anyone know where the Sox payroll is at after dumping Cease’s $8 million, while adding Stephen Wilson’s $770K or so?

I believe it will be 7.3M less than what it was before
