The A's are moving to Vegas thread

To prove how not-serious the A's took stadium negotiations, this snippet from Nightengale's piece.

The A’s told MLB they plan to play in a revolving series of sites until they move, one MLB owner told USA TODAY Sports on the condition of anonymity because MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred has yet to publicly address the plans. They will play games in Summerlin, Nevada, home of the A’s Triple-A team, Oracle Park in San Francisco, where the San Francisco Giants play, and perhaps also the Coliseum.

Feel sorry for the city of Oakland. In the last 5 years, they've lost the Raiders, Warriors and As.

As much as I feel sorry for A's fans, maybe its time for Oakland to accept that it is not a major league sports town and try to develop a thriving minor league sports scene. Build a nice 10,000 seat ballpark and try to get a AAA or AA team.

I see a lot of people complaining about MLB on this, but the reality is Oakland has had teams in all four major sports and couldn't make it work for any. Its not just baseball and the A's have been talking about moving from there for 40 years.

Yeah, I’m never siding with super rich owners (especially ones like Mark David and Fisher whose only achievements in life were born into billionaire families) extorting cities for $100s of millions of dollars in taxpayer funds.

Las Vegas is my home away from home, visiting 62 times since 1991, typically 2-3 weeks a year (have family there, did gambling trips when I was young).

Really embraced the Vegas Golden Knights who did everything the right way, and converted the 3-4 thousand max fans of their minor league team (the Wranglers) into I’d say Top 6 NHL US market in terms of knowledge and fan base interest.

City is NFL crazy because gambling, so they would embrace any team even Mark Davis’ now pathetic organization. When it comes to this team and this owner, not sure if this will be a good long term move or fit.

Fischer had much better offers on the table he passed on then this. The site across I 15 would have given him the real estate empire he was angling for, and this site gives him nothing, barely enough room to fit the stadium.

They need to tear down the second oldest casino on the strip to accommodate. Local fans really try to avoid going to the strip, a traffic nightmare, and this is in the heart of it. The Raiders stadium is far enough south to accommodate 215 traffic, the hockey stadium on the strip though with 1/3 less capacity and enough infrastructure to accommodate fans.

The A’s will have none of it, will be playing in a dome for nearly all of the season, will have the lowest TV market and will struggle to sell seats after a possible initial honeymoon phase. Fischer took the worst possible alternative because he overplayed his hand. John Fischer will join the ranks of Jeff Loria, Art Modell and Robert Irsay in terms of being the most hated and despicable owners in modern American sports history.

Reds' owner wasn't that far off Fisher's burning in effigy status before 2022...then an injection of exciting young talent turned everything around.  Play an entertaining brand of competitive baseball and anything is possible, even in the smallest markets.

The A's have missed their third deadline today (12/31 and 1/15 the first two) to announce an agreement as to where they plan to play in 2025.

They get $70M from Comcast for their $43.1M payroll team for every year they remain in the Bay Area. A move as close as Sacramento, 85 miles northeast of Oakland, will void the current deal.

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/39419922/oakland-stadium-plans-las-vegas-move-update

The Oakland Coliseum and Triple A stadiums in Sacramento, Las Vegas and Salt Lake City are mentioned as current possibilities. They are jeopardizing their announced 2028 move to Vegas if they don't secure financing by early 2025.

I personally hope the deal craps out and either MLB takes ownership as they did with the Expos, forces a sale to competent ownership or they end up in Salt Lake City so Las Vegas (and Oakland) can start over with a clean slate.

Really banking the on the potential gambling and entertainment ties being more advantageous than what they would appear at first glance.

They can’t even keep an In-N-Out burger ?. I’ll be seeing an A’s game in Vegas, though.

PAC Files Suit Against Nevada Challenging A’s Stadium Funding

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/02/pac-files-suit-against-nevada-challenging-as-stadium-funding.html

Quote

A political action committee backed by the Nevada State Education Association’s Strong Public Schools has filed a lawsuit against the state and its governor, Joe Lombardo. The teachers union is seeking to overturn last summer’s law approving $380MM in public funding for the construction of a new park on the Vegas Strip.....

There’s nothing to suggest the legal challenge represents a serious threat to the A’s relocation efforts at this point. The organization continues to evaluate options for a temporary home city covering the 2025-27 seasons with their lease at the Oakland Coliseum expiring at the end of this year. The A’s are hopeful of having a home facility constructed in Vegas in time for the ’28 campaign.

Very interesting comments from the Vegas Mayor:

https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/las-vegas-mayor-says-athletics-should-not-relocate-despite-plans-figure-out-a-way-to-stay-in-oakland/

"I personally think they've gotta figure out a way to stay in Oakland and make their dream come true."

She’s one hundred percent on point, except Oakland’s first choice was the Wild Wild West site, not the Tropicana site.

That said, Clark County is responsible for this site, which is outside Las Vegas city limits, so she really has no power beyond persuading others. It is the equivalent of Mayor Johnson opining on the Arlington Heights’ Bears stadium beyond the impact in Chicago.

In Vegas (or more accurately Clark County), they were initially offered the Rio site on Flamingo west of I-15 which makes the most sense in terms of the maximizing development acreage and lowering traffic congestion. Oakland of course rejected it, just like they have far better arrangements to stay in California.

Oakland brought the Wild Wild West site to Carson City, on Tropicana but like the Rio also west of I-15 / the Strip. This would have given them the second highest real estate development acreage. However, it is owned by the anti-union scumbag Station’s Casinos, so the collective unions were able to block that deal in the Nevada assembly.

The Tropicana site was given as a CV last minute alternative before the end of the Spring Session after the WWW site was defeated. It took a lot of arm twisting to barely pass this revised bill. It is a very bad parcel for all parties involved.

  • First the Strip is already an absolute cluster F , even before you factor in Formula One which will continue to devastate traffic and the overall Strip experience  over the next nine years.
  • Second, this is the worst site for the A’s (even worse than building on the Coliseum land) as there is no wiggle room with the adjacent airport. They have no renderings at this point, because you can’t fit a retractable roof with height and space limitations on the site. And there is little additional room for additional resort development.

Ultimately I see the current plan either being changed or rescinded by the assembly, moved to a better location within Vegas, or falling apart due to Fisher’s incompetence and lack of securing $1.1B to build the bad stadium plan.

Would say the teachers union (isolated vs. the trade unions who want it) is a longer shot to block it in the courts, or get a referendum on the ballot for voters to block funding in the upcoming 2024 general election.

I'm a bit confused. When you refer to "Oakland" rejecting, you mean the Athletics, right?

This has to be the most messed up relocation plan of a sports team in history.  I know it is a growing area, but I believe LV will be the smallest market in MLB.  Honestly, San Jose would have been so much better choice.

I'm also guessing that MLB is guiding the A's away from a couple targeted expansion cities, too, like Nashville and Portland, OR. Even tho it's a small market, I think anchoring a team in Vegas locks in some gambling dollars.
