Would never vote for a guy after suspended post Mitchell Report.

Beltran, Beltre, Buehrle, Helton, Hunter, Jones, Mauer, Rollins, Utley, Wagner

Was never really a Jones or Wagner supporter, but they’re close enough that I would probably check them if I actually had a vote.

7 ex-Sox... and mostly for a season or a half season. That's an impressive number of "that guy DID play for us" guys for one team on one ballot.

Per usual, and in true Jerry Reinsdorf fashion, most of these players were all acquired at the end of their careers. Three of the seven active ballot players earned a negative bWAR with the Chicago White Sox over six collective seasons. Frank Thomas is the only inducted player acquired by Jerry Reinsdorf in his 20s.

Current Ballot

White Sox career bWAR / Player / Age & Years on the White Sox

  • 48.9 Mark Buehrle 21-32 (2000-2011)
  • 5.3 Bartolo Colon 30 & 36 (2003 & 2009)
  • 1.9 Andruw Jones 33 (2010)
  • 0.2 Manny Ramirez 38 (2010)
  • -0.2 Omar Vizquel 43-44 (2010-2011)
  • -0.3 James Shields 34-36 (2016-2018)
  • -0.4 Jimmy Rollins 37 (2016)

Inducted Players acquired by Jerry Reinsdorf (initial White Sox signing 1981-2018):

bWAR post Jerry Reinsdorf acquisitions

  • 68.3 Frank Thomas 22-37 (1990-2005)
  • 28.9 Carlton Fisk 33-45 (1981-1993)
  • 16.6 Tim Raines 31-35 (1991-1995)
  • 12.1 Jim Thome 35-38 (2006-2009)
  • 9.7 Tom Seaver 39-41 (1984-1986)
  • 2.5 Harold Baines 37-38 & 41-42 (1996-1997 & 2000-2001)
  • 0.7 Steve Carlton 41 (1986)
  • 0.4 Ken Griffey Junior 38 (2008)
  • -0.7 Roberto Alomar 35-36 (2003-2004)

  • 2 weeks later...

Two of three elections are now complete.

  • Jim Leyland is the lone inductee under the Contemporary Era Ballot.
  • Joe Castiglione is the lone inductee under the Ford Frick Ballot.

Voting for the BBWAA Ballot will continue through December 31, 2023.

Only nine reported ballots are in at this juncture (Beltre and Helton above the threshold, Sheffield and Mauer slightly below) but you can track updates daily via this link:

Ballots were due in Cooperstown yesterday. 93 voters, or 26%, have publicly declared their ballots.

 http://www.bbhoftracker.com/2023/11/2024-bbhof-tracker-summary-and-leaderboard/

It appears three of my six selections are likely to reach the 75% threshold.

  • 98% Adrian Beltre (1st)
  • 83% Joe Mauer (1st)
  • 82% Todd Helton (6th)

My remaining three selections are either eliminated or extremely unlikely to make it this year, but all should make it within their remaining eligibility window.

  • 65% Carlos Beltran (2nd)
  • 64% Andruw Jones (7th)
  • 44% Alex Rodriguez (3rd)

Billy Wagner (79%) is the one player I omitted which will likely be elected this year.

Gary Sheffield at this stage (73%) will likely finish just short of the threshold on his final BBWAA appearance.

I continue to be against shortening the ballot eligibility window from 15 years to 10. I do appreciate there is far less dicking around by voters to withhold votes for nearly anyone in their first year of eligibility.

Tuesday announcement.

Looking like Beltre, Helton, and Mauer

…maybe Wagner

…maybe Sheffield, but probably not.

Will be heartbreaking for Sheffield if he misses by a few votes.

I think Sheffield should be in. I believe there are automatic numbers that get you in (unless steroids were involved), and one of them is 500 homers. Unless Sheffield had steroid connections, which I no longer remember.

Beltre is a slam dunk first ballot guy.

Helton, Mauer, and Wagner are definitely hall of famers. I’m just not sure that Mauer is a first ballot guy.

He claims he didn't knowingly use steroids, but was once provided a cream by Bonds to recover from a knee injury.

Ortiz waltzing in has kinda ruined the sanctity of the Hall regarding questionable steroid use for me. Blatant use? Sure.
