Sleepy Harold
Sox only make one selection in AAA phase and don't lose anyone (if I recall correctly).
Balta1701
So Drohan has to stay on the big league roster (or IL) the whole year right?

That's the short of it. There's some exceptions and I'd love to see a club assign a guy to the minors and just lose the 26th man spot while avoiding the rule. Players must remain on the active MLB roster for a minimum of 90 days within the following year. For players failing to reach that threshold due to injury, they are subject to the same 90 day minimum in future year(s) until they qualify, are returned, or are kept for considerations via trade. See this isn't clear, it sounds like reading the rules that they could just "forfeit" carrying 26 guys at the big league level and assign him to AAA after or during or around or whatever the 90 days he was active on the MLB roster. I'd imagine this would be frowned upon by literally everybody and the Sox would never do it, but it would be interesting in a "tank" year. But can they assign a guy to AAA and just lose the MLB roster spot? Is their some "active" designation a player can get in addition to simply being on the roster? I would think a player would file a grievance if they were placed on an injury status without an injury. The rule is not 90 days on active roster and teams can do whatever. It's the entire year on the MLB roster, with the ability to IL a player and keep them if they were active for 90 calendar days. It is feasible if a player is close to 90 days and has a season ending injury, the club would play short handed and delay placement on the IL until the 90 calendar day threshold is met. If a player has a season ending injury in April, they can be returned, compensation can be negotiated to keep the player without future year restrictions, or the player has to qualify (90 day active roster, MLB active or IL the entire year) during the following year to be kept without future restrictions. Lefty, control issues, but plenty of swing and miss, and in today's MLB if he can pitch 5 innings more often than not he's a starter. nrockway
Nasim Nuñez and Deyvison de los Santos were also selected in the rule 5 draft. I like either one of those guys better than Nicky Lopez but they probably aren't major league ready. pretty surprised that they weren't protected, Nuñez stands to be one of the best defensive shortstops in the league even if he can't hit.
