CWSpalehoseCWS
It’s an incredibly stupid rule. I’d rather have my players comfortable than forcing them to conform because of an ancient team tradition. 5
JoeC
I understand why it's there (Steinbrenner's military school background). The other way to look at it is that you know the players either: a) REALLY want to get paid the big bucks and are willing to shave their faces to do it or b) are willing to make this "sacrifice to join the team; therefore, there's a certain level of buy-in that is already established and ingrained into the clubhouse culture. Is it dumb? Maybe. But I can at least see some of the logic behind it.

nrockway
pointless and paternalistic. what they did to that poor batboy is a tragedy. on the other hand, 99% of mlb facial hair looks terrible. LIK like, this isn't a good look, his boss shouldn't tell him to shave it, he should just know better
Tnetennba
It's 2024, not 1954. It is an incredibly stupid rule and always has been. Baseball is an international game that attracts players from all over the world. Requiring men from other nationalities and cultures to adhere to an antiquated "clean cut" standard is problematic to say the least. 2
Lip Man 1
Given the Yankees "success" over the decades and recently, I mean they've had a winning record in what 10 of the last 11 years for example, and seem to make the postseason on a regular basis, I'd say the rule isn't hurting them very much. Money speaks a lot louder than facial hair rules. And the Yankees spend it. 3

Texsox
I think it's stupid but I think most rules are stupid. They are adults and should know how to look and act. Of course that didn't really work for TLR who had no rules.

And he just went to a high school (not affiliated with the military directly) that used military style structures as a framework for leadership development in its students. The Yankee culture stuff I see DRIPS with that background.

They are a top revenue team and top payroll team, but have thankfully sucked ass since George died. For people thinking Michael Reinsdorf will be an improvement, think again. Let’s also note that a lot of guys on the Yankees do not choose to be there. They are drafted by them or are traded to them without their consent. Juan Soto currently has no control over where he plays next year. They may put on a show because they’re professionals but that doesn’t mean they like it.

It happens with the Yankees but it can also be a rule in other companiesas well. I think it is dumb but the owner can make "some rules" and if a player doesn't like it he can go elsewhere. Obviously a ton of very talented -players have followed the rule in order to play for the Yankees.

Quin
The fun thing is you can't even argue in favor of a clean, traditional look anymore since they're one of the teams with a jersey sponsor. Maybe if they had gone with Gillette or Barbasol, sure.
