It’s a good signing.  Some posters here were talking about how the Cubs were having an awful offseason.  Hoyer was always going to spend some money.  He was just waiting on the free agent market to settle down so he could get some deals.

Now they pretty much have to sign Bellinger OR Chapman.

BOTH would be considered winning the offseason.

One will be considered hopefully keeping pace with 2023.

They’re also going to have to trade Morel in that case as well, if those two guys were both inked.

For one year?

The MLBTR projection was $15M for 2 years, or $7.5M AAV.

This deal maxes out at $23M, with $18M guaranteed over two years for sixty 2024 appearances ($9M player option is secured, he can still walk if he wishes).

Not seeing this as a great bargain, but the Cubs have to add just to tread water from their mediocre season.

There is also this:

There were a few red flags, however, which is likely why the righty landed what is officially just a one-year guarantee.  Neris’ fastball velocity dropped to 93mph in 2023, rather markedly down from the 94.3mph average of his first nine seasons.  He also had an 11.4% walk rate, marking the third time in the last four seasons that Neris’ walk rate has sat within the bottom 23rd percentile of all pitches.  With a tiny .219 BABIP and a big 90.5% strand rate also aiding his efforts, Neris’ 3.89 SIERA was over two runs higher than his real-world ERA.

It’s fair to assume that some regression is in order, and these troubling secondary metrics aren’t exactly a great sign for a pitcher who turns 35 in June.

You keep saying this and that the Sox have had a better offseason than the Cubs, which I can’t see how with all the dumpster diving Getz has done.  But let’s see where both teams end up come opening day.

Dude, I responded to your absurd post stating the Cubs should get state tax subsidies because they have been "trying the past several years". Both points are ludicrous. Sorry you're butt hurt that I responded.

Both teams have lost ground this offseason, both teams have been embarrassing the past several years, and both will be mediocre or worse until they acquire significant reinforcements.

That's a great deal for the Cubs. If he goes back to being bad, it's only for a short time. Score one for the Cubs over Boras.

Makes the Benintendi deal look even dumber, in retrospect…there’s just no way the Sox competitive window was ever going to extend through 2027, even with Robert also around, too.
