South Side Hit Men
I think there may be lower tier FAs with a shot if the Sox can get a good deal within whatever budget they have. SS - I'd still take Tim on a one year prove it deal for the $8M listed. RF - Joey Gallo might be had at a bargain, perhaps an invite for Kyle Lewis to see if anything sparks there. SP - Montas, German, Junis and Wood could be worth signing in terms of possible budget fits, depending on Brian Bannister's thoughts. RP - Hope they can find a few pitchers worth a chance on similar to the Santos and Middleton pick ups last offseason.

South Side Hit Men
Well near the halfway poll, and here are the teams which have increased and decreased year over year Opening Day Payroll through 12/29/23 acquisitions. There should be several additional teams to exceed their 2023 OD payroll once we get to Opening Day. That said this helps show which teams likely have more room to spend on the remaining free agents, which teams may be done, and which teams are likely tanking payroll because they make more money sucking. Love that the Dodgers have cut payroll year over year to date despite the Ohtani and Yamamoto signings. it is a bad year for high priced free agents with the Padres, Angels, Mets and White Sox significantly cutting payroll. $427.6M will need to be spent through opening day to avoid a year over year decrease in spending. Cots Contracts 2024 & 2023 Teams which have increased year over year OD payroll as of 12/29/23: Net $133.7M $36.8M Houston Astros (6) $16.9M Atlanta MLB Team (5) $16.3M Washington Nationals (20) $14.6M Kansas City Royals (21) $14.0M Tampa Bay Rays (26) $12.6M Arizona Diamondbacks (16) $11.2M Baltimore Orioles (27) $8.9M Texas Rangers (9) $2.1M Cleveland Guardians (25) $0.3M Miami Marlins (24) Teams which have decreased year over year OD Payroll as of 12/29/23: Net $561.3M $95.7M San Diego Padres (12) $67.9M Los Angeles Angels (14) $62.7M New York Mets (2) $58.4M Chicago White Sox (18) $38.1M San Francisco Giants (13) $36.1M Colorado Rockies (15) $34.5M Minnesota Twins (19) $28.1M Detroit Tigers (23) $22.1M Oakland Athletics (30) $20.8M Milwaukee Brewers (22) $14.6M Chicago Cubs (9) $13.8M Cincinnati Reds (28) $13.1M Seattle Mariners (17) $12.8M Boston Red Sox (10) $12.7M Saint Louis Cardinals (11) $11.0M Philadelphia Phillies (3) $9.1M New York Yankees (1) $9.0M Pittsburgh Pirates (29) $0.5M Toronto Blue Jays (7) $0.3M Los Angeles Dodgers (4)
caulfield12
So far we are focusing on guys that have been non-tendered, rejected by the Korean league or incapable of making the Royals line up. A unique strategy to say the least Lewis not a viable starting outfielder at this point. Would be better than Gallo or Sheets though. caulfield12
Significant falls in the AL Central outside of KC and Cleveland, where a slight upswing would be erased by the trade of Bieber at any point this season. Obviously the Padres trying to get down to the $200ish million range. Edited January 26 by caulfield12

GREEDY
Wasn't sure where to put this but if you're not trading Cease, any chance Jerry would like to bump up the Sox on this payroll tracker? Chapman and Clevinger sure don't make this club look like they are 35/1 to win the division: RF Fletcher/Pillar LF Benintendi CF Robert DH Eloy 3B Chapman 1B Vaughn 2B Moncada SS Dejong/Lopez C Stassi/Maldonado SP Cease SP Clevinger SP Fedde SP Soroka SP Kopech You probably don't trade Santos if you were going to turn around and spend 100 million but I'm personally fine roling the dice in the pen until the deadline. That lineup is my favorite in the division. Edited February 10 by GREEDY

That lineup is my favorite in the division. I'd add $31M to the current $132M for an updated $163M 2024 payroll after your additions of Chapman ($20M AAV), Clevinger ($12M AAV) and Pillar ($3M AAV). Pretty sure Jerry before hiring Getz told him he was stuck with Pedro until middle to end of 2024 and he must cut as much payroll as possible for the next few seasons. But if Jerry won a $1B Powerball or something and he authorized $30M more today, Pillar could work, but I would just stick with Moncada at 3B, and I pass on Clevinger because of who he is, not necessarily his projected performance. He pitched well for the Sox, but I'm glad he is gone. With approximately $35M in additional money & FanGraphs Crowd Sourced projected Median AAVs, I'd go this route with the spending: LF A. Benintendi (L) 1B A. Vaughn (R) CF L. Robert Jr. (R) DH E. Jimenez (R) 3B Y. Moncada (S) RF J. Soler (R) $16.0M SS P. DeJong (R) C M. Maldonado (R) 2B T. Anderson (R) $8.0M Bench: C M. Stassi (R); INF N. Lopez (L); INF/OF L. Sosa (R); OF D. Fletcher (L) D. Cease (R) H. J. Ryu (L) $10.0M E. Fedde (R) M. Soroka (R) M. Kopech (R) Bullpen: Closer: J. Brebbia (R) Set Up: T. Hill (L); J. Chavez (R); G. Crochet (L) Middle: D. Garcia (R); S. Drohan (L); Swing: T. Toussaint (R); C. Flexen (R) AAA Pitchers with Options Starters: J. Eder (L); J. Shuster (L); N. Nastrini (R); J. Scholtens (R) Relievers: T. Banks (L); A. Speas (R); P. Berroa (R); S. Peralta (L); J. Lambert (R) - Unless he shines in ST, just waive him and reclaim or lose him, oh well. He's 29. Not sure what happens Arbitration wise if the Sox kept G. Crochet down to stretch out as far as he can go all season at Charlotte. If they still only have one more year of control with him getting a second arb hearing, than you may as well keep him as a reliever. If the clock freezes, and he can stay healthy, I'd keep him in Charlotte all year and if he can hack 100-120 + innings in 2025, give him a rotation spot at that time. This should have been done in 2021 before his injury.

Extremes, be it the little to no defense or little to no offense, is not ideal. Moving Tim to 2B would improve his defensive contribution. He definitely would be motivated if he can rebound physically and mentally. There should be plenty of chances to play Soler at DH between off days and perhaps injuries to Eloy. You can also play Soler in LF and Pillar or Fletcher and RF, and sit Benintendi if he continues to be absolutely worthless on the field and at the plate. If Benintendi can rebound with improved health and approach, then you have added depth with the inevitable Eloy injury. Soler would be the only Sox beyond Luis who could hit 35-40 HRs with this home park.
