Padres were desperate to move on from Cruz/Carpenter at DH, get cheaper cheaper cheaper. Preller bought high on Carpenter based off 2022 the same way Hahn did with Benintendi. And Braves liked Kerr's arm...a lot of similarities with Bummer.
South Side Hit Men
Matt Carpenter owed $5.5M in 2024, Ray Kerr at the MLB minimum. SD is sending undisclosed cash as well per MLB Trade Rumors. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/12/braves-acquire-matt-carpenter-ray-kerr-from-padres.html Minor Leaguer Drew Carpenter is headed back to the Padres. Just wanted to move on...and didn't have to release Carpenter outright and eat ALL his salary to do so. AA OF Drew Campbell, by the way...figures as a potential replacement for Soto and Grisham. At least one player will come from farm...likely the other through trade and FA. https://www.mlb.com/press-release/press-release-padres-acquire-of-drew-campbell-from-braves Edited December 16, 2023 by caulfield12

Jerry would give his left nut to have signed Carpenter instead of Benintendi last offseason. $64M in total contract savings. Many would take that offer assuming anesthesia part of the deal. Hahn and Kenny with stealth satisfaction each giving Jerry one last middle finger (Kenny via Burger trade preventing an Hahn Anderson trade). Probably would have stuck Matt Carpenter in LF...although he was essentially reduced to 1B/DH in SD. Ofc that's never stopped Sox from sticking misfit parts in corner OF spots before. The Padres sent $1,5M to Atlanta as part of the deal. Atlanta is looking to flip Matt Carpenter. Honestly would rather have Sheets stay at DH since that would keep him out of RF then acquire Carpenter and playing both until a RF emerges. Matt Carpenter is 38, hit the same number of HRs as Andrew Benintendi last season over 76 games and a .176 batting average. Not sure how any team would want him beyond being included in a package that he ends up just getting DFA'd.

ChiSox59
Can't say I really follow the Braves logic this offseason. They've paid like $35M+ to acquire Kelenic and Kerr.
Bob Sacamano
Cardinals signed Matt Carpenter. I thought this guy had almost no shot of being signed but I guess he's getting the minimum only. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/01/cardinals-sign-matt-carpenter-to-one-year-deal.html

caulfield12
According to a fan survey done by The Athletic's Dennis Lin, the confidence in president of baseball operations A.J. Preller has been declining by the fanbase. In the survey, only 5.3% said they were very confident in him, and 19.1% said they were somewhat confident in his ability. On the other hand, 27.5% of the fans surveyed said they were unsure, 26.7% were not very confident, and 21.4% were not confident at all. This is a stark difference from where the team was even a year ago, and it's a direct result of the lack of trust in the front office. https://www.si.com/mlb/padres/news/padres-news-confidence-in-a-j-preller-seems-to-be-decreasing-among-fans-based-on-survey-ml0802 https://www.si.com/mlb/padres/news/padres-release-2-formerly-high-paid-international-minor-leaguers-rks97

In retrospect, it looks like the initial Soto trade was a mistake in that the prospects they gave to the Nationals are far better than what they got from the Yankees. Different situations of course considering Soto's contract situation and I don't think you can fault the Padres for swinging for the fences, but I'd be disappointed if I were a Padres fan...though not really Preller's fault he was dealt a shitty hand. Exactly like Bloom dealing with Henry and Fenway Sports Group…forced to dump Betts for 15-25 cents on the dollar, then vilified for it. Then criticized for signing Devers after losing Bogaerts. It will be fascinating to see how they fill out the 4/5 spots in the rotation and those two temaining OF spots. Just like the “on the cheap” Korean and Japanese bullpen. Will it actually work? Then there’s leveraging Kim’s massive fWAR this year in trade (walk year), after the Korean Series is over. Can they trade him despite being in WC position? Trade Bogaerts and/Machado? Darvish or Jake Cronenworth, their own version of Benintendi after 4+ fWAR the previous year? Not trading Hader, Snell, Wacha and Lugo hurt too. See Angels. Between a rock and a hard place. Have a feeling this year’s team will outperform 2023, with Tatis and Bogaerts way off career highs due to injury and sheer number of months of inactivity. All comes down to pitching.
