I thought SG agreed with whoever was having that long convo that the return should be Cowser/Kjerstad and Ortiz, and not a bit higher until the bidding went up. Yes, which to me is reasonable considering Cease has 2 years of control versus Burnes’ one.

WhiteSox2023
Elias was just hyping up Hall as a starter long-term, even though he may break camp as a reliever. Should’ve known he was headed out the door.
Chicago White Sox
4 minutes ago, WhiteSox2023 said: Hall may be nothing more than a long/middle reliever with his current walk rate. Oh no doubt, and that’s the likely outcome, which is why I’m calling it a quantity deal for them. But if he were to somehow get some command and could stick in the rotation, the ceiling would be pretty high.

I don’t think they were committed to dealing him unless they got the right deal (and this gives them two major league ready pieces that can slot into their rotation and at SS) and I don’t believe all GMs like paying up for arms with just one year of control. IF IF IF Hall can actually hold up as a starter...

I would love this trade. The SV for the above is 54m vs Cease's 42m. Even a 10% pitching premium only gets us to about 46-47m. Perhaps the other 8m will be the Cashman doesn't want to get fired premium. Edited February 2 by SoCalChiSox

caulfield12
The loss of Burnes puts a big dent in the Brewers’ 2024 pitching – and, thus, their overall hopes. Freddy Peralta will now slot in as the expected opening day starter. Wade Miley and Colin Rea are right behind Peralta in the rotation while Joe Ross, Robert Gasser, Aaron Ashby and potentially Hall will fight for the backend spots. Hall, a lefthander, has a powerful four-pitch mix that is led by an elite fastball. He was used primarily as a reliever for the Orioles last year and scouts believe he could be an elite late-inning bullpen arm, but the fact that he possesses four above-average pitches leave the door still very open to chances he could start if he refines his command. Hall was ranked by Baseball America among the top 100 prospects in baseball each year from 2019-2023. Ortiz is a glove-first shortstop who made his MLB debut for Baltimore last year. Baseball America ranked him as the No. 95 prospect in the league prior to last season. Ortiz, 25, has hit .286 with a .806 OPS across four minor-league seasons. https://www.jsonline.com/story/sports/mlb/brewers/2024/02/01/brewers-trade-corbin-burnes-to-orioles-for-prospects-dl-hall-joey-ortiz/72444318007/
DirtySox
I would be totally cool with a Yankees package centered around Hampton, Arias, and Lombard/Lalane. I still think there is a deal out there to be made with NY.
caulfield12
Burnes should be around $14.1 million for 2024. They must have been waiting for the new investment group to sign off on that one. Secondly, Cubs Cardinals Reds Pirates even more incentive to compete with Milwaukee seemingly out of contention unless Chourio is going to win RoY. https://theathletic.com/5245961/2024/02/01/mlb-trade-grades-corbin-burnes-deal/ Edited February 2 by caulfield12

caulfield12
freely available at baseballamerica.com from front page Hall has long flashed some of the most exciting pure stuff you could ask for from a lefthanded pitcher. He has three separate pitches that grade as plus or better, headlined by a top-of-the-scale fastball that sits in the mid 90s with excellent riding life and bat-missing traits at the top of the zone. His slider is also a plus offering in the mid-to-high 80s that is a weapon in same-side matchups, and a changeup that has developed into another plus offering and is tough against righties. Control has always been the Achilles’ heel for Hall and led to significant reliever risk, but he did show improvement in this area in 2023 and posted just a 6.2% walk rate in a 19-inning big-league stint out of the bullpen. He ranked as the Orioles No. 6 overall prospect and is No. 93 on the Top 100. Joey Ortiz, SS Age: 25 Ortiz had an all-glove, light-bat profile coming out of college in 2019 when he was a fourth-round draft pick out of New Mexico State. Like many Baltimore hitters, he has improved his hitting ability within the system and is coming off a strong 2023 season where he slashed .321/.378/.507 with nine home runs and 30 doubles with Triple-A Norfolk. His bat-to-ball skills are more advanced than his power, and his game still revolves around his excellent defensive work at shortstop—he is among the best defenders in the minors and has double-plus fielding upside at a premium position—but his bat has improved enough to give him everyday regular big league upside. Ortiz ranked as the No. 7 prospect in the Orioles system. 2024 supplemental first round pick (No. 34) Teams are allowed to trade supplemental draft picks and the Brewers will get the 34th overall pick in the 2024 draft in this trade as well. The Braves recently made a similar move when they acquired the 35th overall pick in the 2022 draft in a trade that sent Drew Waters to the Royals and they used that pick to acquire current No. 3 prospect JR Ritchie. The 2024 draft is shaping up as a down year compared to the 2023 class. You can see players who rank in the 30-40 range on our recently updated draft board here. https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/corbin-burnes-trade-breaking-down-every-orioles-brewers-player-involved/
PolishPrince34
For 1 year of Burnes I think it’s a fair deal. Obviously Elias was trying to pawn off the same two players and I’m glad Getz said hell no to that return with the headliner of Ortiz. 1

Would feel better about this happening if Snell signs somewhere and Montgomery goes back to Texas. But then again, who is going to sign Snell? Dude is on some bath salts with his current expectations. According to USA TODAY’s Bob Nightengale in a story published Jan. 27, “Blake Snell’s lone offer was a six-year, $150 million deal from the New York Yankees after Snell requested $270 million over nine years.” Edited February 2 by WhiteSox2023
