Though he has plenty of experience in the outfield corners, Soler isn’t likely to see much time there in San Francisco. His defensive grades have continue to decline over the years, and the Marlins only played him sparingly in right field — including just 241 innings last year. Soler has only twice reached 500 defensive innings played in a season. He’ll serve as the Giants’ primary designated hitter, though it’s possible he’ll make occasional appearances in left or right field.

Farhan Zaidi, the Giants’ top baseball executive, has expressed a desire to move away from two-year deals that include an opt-out after a year. And after the team did not sign Shohei Ohtani, Rhys Hoskins or other top power hitters, Soler was an important piece to land, a right-handed hitter who will go right into the heart of the lineup.

Still think the Giants are well short off the Dodgers, but just have to wait and see.

This is the first time SF has spent significant money on external free agents in many many years.

Always finishing second or third on their preferred targets.

This feels like a White Sox Hahn move. 100%. Paying for at best 2 WAR with a decent chance of replacement level. The opportunity cost is as much of a problem as the actual player they signed. You're just severely limiting yourself trying to boost your team this way late in the offseason. It's almost always better just to promote some 40 man guy that can "play" DH and hit 250/300/480. At least then if you want to move on from him it won't cost you any money, whereas if Soler starts slow you've got 40 million in dead money (and a dead roster spot) just hanging around.

The one guy I wanted for the Sox this year. I know they’re rebuilding but they could’ve signed him and flipped him at the deadline to a contender. Would’ve solved many issues for the team.

Him and Eloy are both injury prone DH's. One would have to play the field.

Which would be a disaster. I also question how flippable Soler would be on a 3 year deal. He wasn't exactly in high demand when he only cost teams money.
