WhiteSox2023
TJ surgery set for Friday. Getz couldn’t dare drop this talented 29 year old pitcher with a 5+ ERA in 2023 last week to make room for a waiver claim of 24-year old OF prospect Canaan Smith-Njigba. ? Bob Sacamano
Those 40-man spots are opening up fast that some were worried about. Edited February 27 by Bob Sacamano

Bob Sacamano
Personally, he seemed to be getting buried on the depth chart with the depth they’ve added this offseason to the point where you could have DFA’d him and not really cared. The options are what he had going for him. 1
Lip Man 1
I never wish ill on a player but this guy was flotsam and jetsam anyway. From a baseball perspective it is no big loss. By my count four pitchers hurt already not that it will matter this season.
ChiSox59
Feel for Jesse. That might be all she wrote for his MLB shots at his age, and he could have easily carved out a nice role this year.

He was absolutely terrible last year and he was turning 30. A guy like Scholtens taking up a spot on the roster is why Getz does not have roster crunch issues. 85 innings 1-9 record (yes, it’s a team stat but a record this bad is hilarious nonetheless) 5.29 ERA 1.53 WHIP 100 hits 58 strikeouts 30 walks Edited February 27 by WhiteSox2023

Not sure how that is some wild stretch. I am not talking about the guy becoming a mainstay in the pen for the next half decade.

On a team with a ton of youngsters, a guy who can go out and give you a lot of innings on a regular basis out of the pen is something that is valuable. Not burning out your kids who are your future is a thing.

Even so, as a starter, he put up some nice game scores against Texas, Cleveland, Milwaukee and Baltimore. Putting on my dick hat, again, maybe if the Sox traded him for Baily Horn, all the people mocking Scholtens would be telling us how he was great prospect depth we shouldn't have given up on. No, because he's 30 in April and not a prospect.

Sure, but he was also a guy who Getz should have been quick to drop for a more promising and younger DFA.

Yep, "just a guy" is the phrase that has been tossed around here lately for certain guys. Or as I like to call them: JAGs.

Yeah, like I said above, he was getting buried with other depth signings too. Not buried, but if you had to DFA him you could.

And there is a pretty decent chance that if surgery is set for Friday, this happened long before said claim period.

They have Davis Martin waiting for a 60-day IL, too. I liked Smith-Njigba. He passed through the 8 worst teams twice. Fangraphs seems to think he's a AAAA player. He just doesn't seem to be well regarded.

WhiteSox2023
Canaan Smith-Njigba has an .887 OPS, 3 homers, and 2 stolen bases this Spring. Yes, it’s only Spring Training but Getz couldn’t dare give up a guy like Scholtens or another scrub on the 40-man roster for him.

Another Wilson Betemit or Ryan Sweeney-esque spring training? Edited March 10 by caulfield12
