Figued that but it would be strange to rule that a FC and not a hit. Rarely do official scores assume he wouldve have got the out at 1st.

The fielder's choice rule states that if a fielder fields a fair ball, and tries to get the runner out instead of the batter, the batter being safe at first base is a fielder's choice. There's no assumption that the fielder would have thrown out the batter, just that the fielder chose to not make a play on the batter. The batter winding up on 1st base isn't scored as a hit.

Sox pull ahead thanks to the young guys (and Moose).

Shewmake triple, Fletcher groundout, Moose bloop RBI single, tie game 2-2.

Montgomery single, Burdick K, Jacob Burke RBI single, Sox lead 3-2.

Ramos worked a walk to load the bases, but a Phillips groundout ends the inning.

Leasure in to pitch.

Jacob Burke made an impressive catch to rob a hit for the first out. Pop out to 1B for the second out. Joey Bart hit a single to right, but Leasure got a K looking on a nice slider to end the inning. Sounds like he was sitting around 96-97, and maybe playing with the pitch mix a bit.

Cousins comes in, gets Diaz and McCray to hit groundballs but both get through. Then he threw a pickoff throw to third base away, scoring Diaz and advancing McCray to third, before he scored on Tom Murphy's sacrifice fly for the Giants to take the lead 4-3.

I'd have to see the play but the official scorer could have ruled it a hit is what I'm saying. If there were 2 outs a fielder will usually make the play at 1st on a high chopper since the runner going to 2nd is running on contact after he gets a good secondary lead. Maybe it was a boneheaded play trying to get Moncada at 2nd and he should have gone to 1st for an easy out. Then I understand the FC ruling.

If the fielder thought the only play was at 2nd on a ball deep in the hole and didn't think he could throw the guy out at 1st so he tried to get the runner at 2nd that would be a hit.

So I'm guessing the fielder made a bonehead play in the official scorers opinion. It's not automatically a FC if the official scorer thinks both runners would've been safe . Then he would have to rule it a base hit.

Leasure has looked very good this spring. Sox 3 for 16 with RISP which is going to be a stat we see often when you have a bad hitting team.

Thinking this has been the 1st time all Spring we saw Burke. Glad he acquitted himself well with the RBI Single and nice catch.

Jon Miller stated there was likely not a play at first, leading credence to your take. If this wasn't a spring training game, maybe the scorer would revisit or someone on the Sox would ask the scorer to revisit.

Rule 10.05 (b) (4) says “The official scorer shall not credit a base hit when…..fielder fails in an attempt to put out a preceding runner and, in the scorer’s judgment, the batter-runner could have been put out at first base”.

Sox tie it after a Phillips Walk, Payton double and Korey Lee sacrifice fly, but the Sox run themselves out of another inning after Payton was picked off at 3rd with two outs. Dumb baseball continues in Arizona.

Ok Phillips walk, Payton double 2nd and 3rd no outs. Shewmake grounds out to 1st , no one scored. 3rd time today a ground out with a runner on 3rd that didn't score a runner with less than 2 outs. Another time or 2 was a K.

Finally SF from Korey Lee got the run home but again just 1run in a situation where a team should score 2 at minimum.

Shaw gives up a walk and SB with two outs and then a blast by backup catcher Tom Murphy to deep left which would have been at least a double if it wasn't the game winning hit to score Meckler and give the Giants a 5-4 win in Scottsdale.

15 left on base today by the White Sox.

Sox lose 5-4 on a walk off single with 2 outs. Shaw walked a batter then 2 outs a steal of 2nd and the single.

Sox officially 3 for 21 with RISP could have won easily with any clutch or situational hitting w sac flys instead of GO to corner infielders or the pitcher and K's.

In fairness, they probably should have scored one when this happened top 8.

Moose and Montgomery walks, a Burdick K, and a double steal put runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out. A soft Burke grounder was flipped back to the plate for an out on Remillard pinch running for Moose.

He was called out, but the radio crew conceded that the throw/tag seemed late and the Sox would likely have challenged (and won) if this was a real game.

Those are the breaks. It doesn't excuse the other times they didn't hit a sac fly or get a hit multiple times in similar situations today. You hit it up the middle on a drawn in infield instead of to the 1st baseman and you likely score a run also. Fletcher and Vaughn also K'd in similar situations today.

You score runs with homeruns and doubles. Not singles and bunts. This isn't 1973 and you play at G-Rate, not the Astrodome.

Getz thinks he can bring back smallball.  All he did was build a lineup of corpseball.

Getz brought in 14 position players to camp, and not a single player with a projected .700 OPS. Not. One. Hitter.

Nicky Lopez hits another double. He leads the Cactus League with 6. Hustles to third after a passed ball, no outs.

Can we flip him now so we don’t have to watch him crater back to earth once the games count?

Trade him to the Dodgers, or DeJong...just no way that Mookie Betts can handle SS with this little transition time and not have it affect his offense in a negative way.

Flipping their double play combination at this late date is something you would expect out of the White Sox, especially when he's played something like 12 starts there his entire MLB career.

Mookie is an insane athlete. If anybody could do it, I'd think he could. I feel like if that guy decided to be like a world class darts player if you gave him a few years he would get pretty close.
