Bighurt52235
I was wondering last night; how many NFL head coaches were once players in the NFL? Because I couldn't think of any.
southsider2k5
Right off of the top of my head, Dick Jaron and Jack Del Rio of Jacksonville. I know there are plenty of others.
Chisoxfn
Steve Spurrier, Jeff Fisher, Tony Dungy, Dave Wanstedt are some others off the top of my head.
SuperSteve
Herman Edwards (or whatever the name of the guy who coaches the Jets is).
Bighurt52235
I was just wondering because it seems that MLB managing is almost a must to have palyer experience, but football seems different.

I think it is pretty common in all sports for ex-players to become coaches/managers.
doubleM23
Mike Tice. And I think Jeff Fisher played. Football (at least to me) seems to require the least emphasis on coaches being former players. I can name a few coaches who are just strictly products being students of the game and coaching at different levels; but never played. Such as Gruden (I believe), Bill Callahan, John Madden (though, he doesn't coach any more), and Mariucci.
