Maybe not.  @WestEddy made a good point that Grossman’s defense is Sheets-like in RF, but I guess that hasn’t stopped them from starting Sheets in RF.  However, they will still need Pillar to back up CF.  Ideally, Grossman tears it up at AAA and they can somehow fit both Pillar and Grossman on the roster.  It’s too bad no one else can back up 1B because Sheets is the guy who should be in AAA.  Grossman and Pillar are old and may be done but they have both hit lefties fairly well in their careers and it could make some sense if they are in LF and RF respectively against left-handed starters, with Robert in CF, Eloy at DH, and Benintendi on the bench.

They really shouldn't go down a platoon route beyond protecting Fletcher's confidence, since it doesn't appear he has any chance vs. LHP, and may not have much vs. RHP over extended MLB at bats.

There is really no room for Grossman, Pillar and Sheets. Of the three, I rather have Pillar, primarily because he can cover CF. Grossman really only makes sense if they have little confidence in Fletcher to allow him to play everyday in AAA. Still rather see Colas play regularly here, not sure if he will ever be given another chance by Getz and Grifol.

Has to be great if Pittsburgh can't find room for him.

Adolis Garcia was designated for assignment by two teams (Cardinals and Rangers) and any other team could have claimed him each time but didn’t.  Smith-Njigba may be nothing but teams’ scouts aren’t always right.

Hey no claimed Pillar either, he's going to be great!  Sure you can find a diamond once in a while, but the vast majority of the time this is teams taking out the trash.

Let’s pick him the hell up please.  Sure, he may amount to nothing but what is the risk?  Beggars shouldn’t be choosy.

Couldn’t they just cut Jesse Scholtens (torn UCL) from the 40-man roster and claim Smith-Njigba?

They can't.  He isn't on the 40 man roster.  He is on the 60 day DL.

Sure, but he’s a 24 year old lefty outfielder with pretty good minor league stats and he performed pretty well this ST.  He is nothing like a 35 year old outfielder in Pillar that no team but the Sox would give heavy playing time to.

Players on the MLB 60 Day IL don't count against the 40 man roster.

Scholtens is already on the 60-day IL. I think they've cut away all the fat they had. They just DFA'ed their last AAA reliever. They'd probably be down to Bailey Horn, and Speas, and they already have 2 LHH AAA RFs (DeLoach, Colas), not counting the veteran AAAA detritus.

And still no one else in the trash heap has taken a shot at him multiple times.

Disagree here. I think it makes lots of sense for Grossman to replace Sheets on the roster. Leave Pillar in a 4th OF role and platoon Grossman and Fletcher. Grossman is great vs LHP. Sheets should only play be RHP and when would you play him instead of Eloy or Vaughn? He doesn’t have a spot

Comes down in part on what the focus should be this season.

Didn’t argue for Sheets in my post. My point it with two absolutely worthless and counterproductive adding even more veterans on the roster, including further postponing player evaluation and development.

With guys in their mid 20s (Fletcher, Sosa, Colas), max their playing time at the MLB level to see if the Sox can salvage anything or move on with a clear conscious. Play in Charlotte is not going to prove they are ready. Grossman and Pillar aren’t going to be flipped for anything beyond say a one in 100-200 season 95-100% projection result.

Play this cycle until one play should start near daily or be sent down with below acceptable production:

Colas: RF (100 Games): Back up 1B (15 Games).

Fletcher (starts only vs. RHP): RF (50 Games), LF (15-20 + Off Days, more of Benintendi continues as a 0.0 WAR player).

Pillar - CF (off days for Robert, some Luis plays DH), plus a a few games monthly to keep fresh and late game insertion for starter rest.

Grossman - Release or park in Charlotte if he is receptive.

Sheets - Would prefer he return to Charlotte.

Agreed here.  Sheets is worthless.  Who can back up 1B in a pinch then?  Maldonado?

Nicky Lopez has played 1B for 18 innings of his career.

Korey Lee also has game at 1B in the minors.
