2024: AL Central Thread

The point is, Gil, who has basically turned into Gerrit Cole in Cole’s absence, is doing Fernando-esque things … and increasingly getting Fernando-esque hype. Gil (pronounced “Heel,” by the way) was never all that heralded by the Yankees or the Twins, the team that traded a 19-year-old Gil to New York in March 2018, for outfielder Jake Cave. But Gil is now doing things almost no Yankee has ever done, including giving up just one hit in six scoreless innings three days after winning the AL Pitcher and Rookie of the Month Awards. We all wondered how the Yankees would handle losing their ace for the first half of the season. By the time Cole comes back, the Yankees will have two – one that they landed with a huge free-agent deal, and one that they apparently created out of thin air.

Jake Cave?  REALLY???   Gil just beat the Twins this past week to add insult to injury.  Amazing scouting work with both him and Cortes last season.  Having that massive scouting budget really makes a difference on the margins for teams like the Dodgers, Yankees, etc.

Man, between this one and Junior Caminero going from CLE to TB in a steal, the AL Central would have been even more difficult for the White Sox to ever contend, even though those pesky Guardians do get the #1 overall the Sox SHOULD be getting with how historically bad 2023-24 have gone.

Kwan an MVP candidate at 373/957

Sox passed him up.

And what the heck kind of name is Schneemann for a SS?

That could only be a Guardians player.

27 year old rookie starting 4/10 and 1.200+ ops.

  • Fullname: Daniel Schneemann
  • Born: 1/23/1997 in San Diego, CA
  • Draft: 2018, Cleveland Indians, Round: 33, Overall Pick: 1003
  • College: Brigham Young
  • Debut: 6/02/2024

AL Playoffs based on first 108:

Twins at Yankees…winner plays Guardians

Royals at Mariners…winner plays Orioles

Sox are 5-5 vs Guardians, so it’s not like they’re the ones getting them the 1-seed.

And the Twins vs Yankees again…they gawn.

White Sox 9 full games behind the Marlins for worst team in baseball but will still draft 10th…

If MLB had any sense at all, it would do something about this.

Based on their offseason, Getz did tank with his pathetic signings and cut payroll a lot.  Why should the Sox be rewarded for trying to be bad?

Consider: Both the Royals and Twins are 12-1 against the White Sox. In other games, the Royals are .500, and the Twins are three games above. Thus, the teams immediately behind them in the AL wild-card race — the Red Sox and AL West runner-up — are at a disadvantage.

The Mariners are 6-1 against the White Sox. The Red Sox are 2-2 and the Astros 1-2, each with one series remaining. The AL Central-leading Guardians, oddly enough, are only 5-5 against a team that has endured losing streaks of 14 and 21 games.

The White Sox currently are on pace to finish 39-123. To avoid breaking the 1962 Mets’ record of 120 losses, they will need to go 15-28 the rest of the way. That’s a winning percentage of .349, well above their current .242 mark.

Oh, but at least the White Sox will get the No. 1 overall pick for their troubles, right? Nope. They will select no higher than 10th because of an anti-tanking measure in the collective bargaining agreement preventing teams that are not revenue-sharing recipients from receiving lottery picks in back-to-back years.

I was just gonna say, KC is doomed the rest of the year. The Sox have come along at the right time each time they've played and KC has used the doormat Sox each series to get their season back on track. They are done with the Sox and back to playing bad baseball and will soon be toast. Meanwhile, Minnie is doing what the Sox should have been doing since the 2005 title: dominating the division. Minnie has beaten up the Sox and KC this season and still has a shot at playoffs as a result.

Sox have been so bad against the Central historically it's hilarious. But back to KC .. ha ha Royals, no more games against the Sox to get you going again.

Remember last offseason when Sox fans were panicking and upset we might acquire Salvy? Look at Perez's stats. He's been amazing and for those who think the clubhouse doesn't matter, he is a true leader. He would have kicked butt in the Sox locker room. They probably would have had to discipline him cause he would not stand for the Sox level of baseball. That's why guys like Abreu/Salvy are valuable despite metrics suggesting they will soon suck or do now suck. Salvador Perez should be a top five MVP candidate this season if the Royals make the postseason. Maybe top 3.

Witt of course has the incredible stats. So yeah. But Perez has proven his value and that he was NOT over the hill. I was listening to the game on radio the other night and some Royals pitcher was inexplicably not throwing strikes with a 3 run lead late. Salvy went out to the mound and lit into the pitcher telling him to get it together. It would have been nice having Abreu around to light a match under these horrible baseball players so to speak.

Guys, the Royals talent is not good. Why them and not us?

Sal Perez +129

Witt +177

Pasquantino +108

DeJong +155

Basically, Lugo, Wacha, Ragans and Singer have all been above average starting pitchers.  All at 129-136 ERA+.

Bullpen hasn't been all that great.  McArthur their closer with 18 saves and pretty pedestrian-sounding numbers.
