JR was never going to give Getz the money to put a competitive team on the field in 2024. I'm judging Getz on what talent he's brought back in trades and how much money he has committed (wasted) beyond 2024. On the trades: some were better than others, but on the whole a decent return for the talent/salary he unloaded. On the future salary, the only money he obligated beyond 2024 is: $1.5M buyout to Brebbia, $250k buyout to Maldonado, $7.5M to Fedde for 2025, $14.25M to Stassi for 25-26+buyout $500K for 2025 buyout. If his strategy is to avoid future salary commitments until there is an owner that will approve a budget that can field a winning team, then I'm on board with that, no matter how bad this team is. This is the way to objectively look at things. Whining about Getz or the poor hitting is like whining that the Pope is Catholic. It's supposed to be that way . Good defense plus good hitting equals All Star players. Just good fielding and bad hitting = guys like DeJong Lopez, Stassi and Maldonado .In Maldonado case it's hard to imagine he got the money he did.You have to wonder if anyone looked at hours of video of him last year or scouted him. He can barely catch thrown pitches any more. Getz made the decision given the budget , to try and get as many reclamation type pitchers he could for as cheap as he could get them and make them look as good as possible with a good defense behind them.None of them are signed long term so you trade them if they perform well and keep building the farm. For every success he was going to have 2 or 3 failures. It wasn't meant to reap a bushel full of talent in return or create a winning team. All it was meant to do was get younger and more talent in the minors. It wasn't a great plan but great plans do not come from the money he had to work with. So far there have been some pitchers looking good. We'll see if it lasts till harvest time and it's sold off for some magic beans.
Bob Sacamano
When (if?) Stassi comes back, who do you get rid of? Can't imagine they brought in Maldonado for either his defense or hitting (brought him in for some other "intangible" reason) so not sure they would cut him early in the season. Korey Lee earned a spot with a good spring and has been good in his limited time so far (already more hits than last season with the Sox in 1/3 the games). Maybe Stassi is the guy launched. He wasn't exactly young when I was a kid and still picking up the occasional physical copy of the Tribune when he was there. His bio says he graduated NW in '82 so I guess he's only in his mid 60s. If they're ready to make Lee the starting catcher then DFA Maldonado. If not, then let Lee start every day at Charlotte. 1
