Yeah but they spent that money on Benintendi instead and it's not like that's working out any better. Not saying re-signing him would have been right but it's not like the FO was competent enough to spend that money any better.
ScootsMcGoots
Man I remember when the Sox signed him, how that was supposed to signify years of competitiveness. Possibly even a dynasty. Ignorant bliss. Edited April 25 by ScootsMcGoots

Equally amazed at who signed him. A team that’s supposed to know talent.

greg775
I think he's 7 hits in 77 at bats. Obviously he's pulling a Hosmer. Only solution, retirement. Like the Astro guy said he still has the bat speed. He's just like Vaughn though. A mess at the plate.
kitekrazy
As players get older you never know when age sets in, It made no sense for the Sox to resign him since they never have a shortage of guys that are 1B/DH material. There’s a huge difference between 1B/DH material and 1B/DH caliber. The Sox have a ton of the former and none of the latter. Abreu would not change that outcome. Reminds of when the Wheeler money went to lesser talent as the wheels went off the track. That was the one that started the dominoes falling over IMO. Can’t blame management either. It’s the exception that proves the Sox rule about long term contracts for pitchers.

chitownsportsfan
Can someone confirm that if he didn't except the assignment he would have forfeited his contract? Reporting on that is unclear. I'm just curious either way.
tjp1684
It seems like as an owner you have to have money set aside to eat a contract and move on. Teams that sign a bad contract and then use it as an excuse to spend nothing more to compete won’t succeed. Perhaps they’ll put in an amnesty provision once owners like JR are out. Players will like it because it will give more money to more players.
