In an already lost season, pitching poorly, and with this new injury (the last two being hindsight I realize), Clevinger appears to be a waste of money just like most of Getz’s other offseason acquisitions.

Brebbia — $7 million

Maldonado — $4.5 million

Nicky Lopez — $4.3 million

Mike Clevinger — $3 million

Mike Soroka — $3 million

Chris Flexen — $1.75 million

$23.55 million wasted on complete and utter crap.  All players that are DFA candidates.

This shouldn't be a surprise. Getz attended the Rick Hahn school of GM'ing after all.

Any sore elbow has to be considered serious for Clevinger considering he has had TJS twice already.

I hope the ligament is so damaged that it cannot be repaired to the point of ever pitching in the bigs again. f*** him. Forever and always.

It's kind of ironic that we're mentioning another Sox pitcher, Tommy John, in this conversation. Tommy was a good and decent family man. A borderline HoF pitcher and someone any Sox fan would want to introduce their kids to.

It's absolutely incredible to me that JR who apparently wants to win "so badly" and is so fiscally responsible hasn't blown his top over the millions and millions of dollars wasted on has-been's, injury-prone guys, dead beats and stiffs.

Just mind blowing.

All the other AL Central teams that can't afford to waste all the money that the Sox manage on a yearly basis.

But especially CLE and KC.

The Royals spent serious money last offseason and just gave Witt close to $300M. I wouldn’t put them in the same category as Jerry especially right now as Jerry looks to trim payroll as they prepare to sell in the near future.

This would be a much better feel good story than Clevinger...

May be a little too late and close to the deadline to sign him and hope he pitches well enough to build up his value.  Plus, this should be the time to give more innings to the Sox own pitching prospects.

He wasn't very good in his 8 Triple-A starts. Just let a kid pitch over another washed up vet.

What happened to Balta?  I just assumed he lost a ban bet to Ron.

He left over Clevinger, but didn't make a scene going out.  He basically let the admin team know and logged off.

$3 million to do nothing.  Sweet deal.  Add up all the money that Getz has wasted and you get one really good player.

If they took all that money to sign one really good player, everyone would complain about the poor quality of the rest of the roster around that one really good player.

That is just an argument for never trying. If they took the money wasted each and every year on dumpster diving they could gradually sign more 'good' players. All we are doing now is trading any good player we get or develop and wasting millions on garbage.

If people thought there was a plan or could see a route to improvement they would be a lot more tolerant of a squad of one or two good players surrounded by developing players or journeymen. At the moment there appears to be no plan and just a scattergun approach to bringing up players and claiming players off waivers then sending players down or DFA ing them.
