DBAHO
Here's da link, ESPN Article Look at this though, The Mets will see if the White Sox will swap Billy Koch's $6.375 million contract for Roger Cedeno and his remaining $10.6 million, split the difference and reunite Koch with pitching coach Rick Peterson. Paul Konerko, Jim Edmonds, J.D. Drew, Odalis Perez, Eric Milton, Mike Lowell, Derrek Lee, A.J. Burnett and Freddy Garcia are all players whose names -- and contracts -- will be mentioned. The White Sox, whose three-year, $36 million offer to Bartolo Colon was far less in present day value because of stacked deferrals at no interest, have serious payroll issues. SoxFan1
Koch for Cedeno! Uuum, no! Thats 4 million down the drain and it holds Rowand back even more! Now Koch, Konerko for Drew and Edmonds is more like it! And at this point, I dont give a s*** about Fartolo! Let him take his 30 HR's thrown to the Spankees. Flash Tizzle
The White Sox, whose three-year, $36 million offer to Bartolo Colon was far less in present day value because of stacked deferrals at no interest, have serious payroll issues. It deid seem odd how they just pulled 12 million out of the air for Colon.....and how none of the money offered to him was mentioned towards other FA's. A revamp of the team might happen quicker then expected. All I can ask, in the event of a fire sale, is that KW makes moves to fill our needs of starting pitching and speed. witesoxfan
I dont give a s*** about Fartolo! Let him take his 30 HR's thrown to the Spankees. So soon do we forget his complete dominance down the stretch when we really needed it. It's not his fault that everybody on the offense tried to hit a 5-run homer every time they went to the plate. If Colon can pitch well for 4 or 5 months of the year(3.50-4.00 ERA or so) and then become so dominant that he is nearly unhittable, he is worth $12 mill a year. Most of the deals will be based around money anyways, that's the situation teams r in at the moment.
Rex Hudler
Winter Meetings start on Monday in Phoenix for da GM's Winter Meetings are Dec. 11-15 in New Orleans.... The GM Meetings in Phoenix are different and a little more lowkey, generally.
Chisoxrd5
However, most general managers believe that even the best of the positional player free agents like Guerrero, Gary Sheffield, Miguel Tejada, Ivan Rodriguez, Matsui, Shannon Stewart and Javy Lopez will experience a downshift in the market. That quote from the article REALLY pisses me off...mainly because of the fact that if position players salaries are going down...WTF did we give Five million dollars to Jose "stunt cock" Valentin??????????? Just wondering... :fyou :fyou
Pastime
I think we spent that much on Jose because he gives the team some left-handed pop in a right-handed-dominant lineup. Plus, the SS market is pretty dry, and any free agent SS would probably command more than that. I'm not happy with the decision either. We could have lowballed him. He stinks defensively, is losing range at SS, can't hit above .235, and is streakier at the plate than anyone I've ever seen. Maybe his nice looking porno mustache arouses Kenny or something. Well I guess we should be at least thankful that it's only for 1 year deal and we're not stuck with him long term. But it's a bit worrying we don't have a real SS prospect to replace him like a Chase Utley or Bobby Crosby.
Pastime
What do you mean? We have Jason Dellaero and his .185 average! Or do we? I haven't heard anything about that stiff for a long time.
Rex Hudler
What do you mean? We have Jason Dellaero and his .185 average! Or do we? I haven't heard anything about that stiff for a long time. Dellaero was released by the Sox at his request about a month into the season when he was at Extended ST. He was picked up by KC, but failed a physical and was immediately released (same injury that had in Ext. ST). He was then picked up by the Reds and finished the year in Chattanooga, their AA affiliate. I believe he is a six-year free agent at this point, but am not positive. Sadly, as bad as the guy was with the stick, he was as good with the glove. He could really pick it at SS.

I understand you're being ticked because we're always on a budget. We need that 5 mil to stay competitive.

winninguglyin83
Most of the talk about Sox SS prospects has centered on Valido and Gonzalez. What about Michael Morse? Is he a prospect at all? made 19 errors in 120 games at high A ball. but his OBP is dreadful -- .296, with only 25 walks in 432 at bats. Does seem to have some pop -- 30 doubles, 10 HRs. Anybody see him play at Winston Salem? Sad to say, but I don't think the sox have developed a home-grown shortstop since Bucky Dent.
WHarris1
The purpose of dumping Koch is mostly salary, so why take on salary if you trade him? Cedeno=s***.
Chisoxfn
Damn I did not realize... Wasn't there hardly any trades during the meeting sessions last season? I mean the Colon trade wasn't until January. There are typically two GM meetings if I recall, first ones in November and then another set in December. But I may just have some weird thought in my head. I just know that Free Agency started today or at least I thought it did and that the GM Meetings kind of coincided with that. Typically the top Free agents and their agents attend these meetings and its an easy way for players to work out deals, but it does seem kind of soon. And if this stuff about the Sox being in deep crap when it comes to payroll are true, then why in pete sake would they take on someone like Roger Cedeno. PUKE. No chance they make that kind of deal. He could of been had for 3 million, but since the Sox waited and waited working on Colon for part of the time I Think they left themselves very vulnerable and they since they didn't have something done with Jose, they had to go make the deal. In hindsight it was a dumb signing considering the money, but he is one of the best options out there. Its just too bad the Sox couldn't of been smart and worked this out beforehand so they wouldn't have to just rush and pick up his option. The guy has some serious size and made an amazing play during one of the games. I think some would question his range and if you move him to 3rd you have to wonder cause he doesn't have a 3rd baseman's pop. He definately opened my eyes with the glove, but typically tall shortstops and this kid is HUGE, get moved for whatever reason. I'd say their is potential in morse. His swing is really funny looking but at times he looked good, and well at other times, UGGH. I say the same for Andy Gonzalez. Both are kind of enigmas with potential. Valido is kind of in the shoes Gonzalez was about two years ago, the question is whether Valido makes the jump better then Andy. The Sox have had some solid infield prospects that just bite the dust when they hit A ball. Pedro Lopez and Andy Gonzalez are the two recent ones I'm referring to. All I'm going to say is that the Sox are gonna have to find someone for another year or two at the very latest cause you can't count on anyone in the system for a while. Rex Hudler
There are typically two GM meetings if I recall, first ones in November and then another set in December. But I may just have some weird thought in my head. Jason, there is only one set of GM Meetings. The other, in December are the Winter Meetings, which is where there is the most activity. The current GM Meetings have been specifically structured so as not to become a free agent frenzy. No more than two personnel from any Major League team are allowed to stay in the main hotel. Any others that have to stay at a different hotel, not made public (although I am sure word gets out). This is, in part to help keep the media at bay and make it more difficult for agents to roam the halls looking for "business".
Rex Hudler
I guess I just never noticed before I remember Pete Yorn being someone he recommended several years ago and that turned out to be solid. Also, I believe he mentioned John Mayer in his budding days as well, but not sure on that one.
