salary cap in baseball?

I think some sort of a salary cap should be implimented. Luxury tax is just bulls*** and it does nothing, deep pocketed tycoons can still throw out 200 mil plus in a season. It would be interesting to see what it would be as there are a huge range of payrolls in the game. It just pisses me off that many times money=playoffs at least.

Absolutley.... I was in favor of a strike before, provided it was the owners trying to impliment revenue sharing/luxury tax/salary cap. The strongest union in professional sports is still just as powerful, as demonstrated by the farce of steriod testing that happened last season, and it will still be just as powerful until the end of the current CBA.(I don't remember what year that goes through) I can not see any such thing as a salary cap in baseball for the foreseable future.

Sounds good in theory, but don't see it happening. As was pointed out to me in the past, baseball contracts are guaranteed. The one thing that creates alot of parity in the NFL, where a pretty Hard Salary Cap exists, is that veterans can be cut, like Lawyer Malloy, without signifigant Cap damage. Baseball will still have guys that, if you had a salary cap, would be even HARDER to trade away. Lets say you sign your Fan-Favorite right fielder to a 3 yr, 30 million deal. Well, if said player has a bad season, a la Konerko or Koch, NO CHANCE IN HELL that you can move him in the Off-Season, like the Sox are currently discussion. With the talks of a Salary Cap will come screams from the MLBPA about Collusion, and in all honesty they will have a point. The owners will have a severe upperhand in negotiations at that point, because all will fear getting burned on that one big contract they give out, and players salaries will be controlled by the MLB owners. Should the salaries be held in check by the owners? Of course, but thats another argument. Its hard to win any kind of injunction against the strongest union in the US.

If all else fails, just blame Curt Flood for all this mess!! :lolhitting

Things change...they can change in baseball.

The owners had a great chance in 1994 to change the salary situation and then a few caved in, even though baseball [fans, players and owners] had already paid the pain.

It was clear salaries could not continue to escalate at the rate they were going. ARod was getting about what the Angels sold for...and there are 25 players on a team.

Revenues were not keeping up with salaries. We are seeing the first results in a soft salary situation for the second year in a row. Things will change when either several teams go under and others are worried about their existence and/or when the players begin to see stability in salaries [salary cap and floor] might be better for players as well as owners.

Will it happen? This is now a world where there are more and more places to spend your time, energy and money for entertainment. My mother was telling us the other night over dinner about growing up on a farm near Batavia, IL. They didn't have electricity--just a battery that a generator kept charged. They only used the battery for emergencies and for her dad to hear the baseball games at night when he got done working the farm. As she said, "God help you if you touched that radio...That was only for dad and the baseball games." Those days are long gone. Not just because electricity, but because you can watch 750 channels on TV and see a zillion different sports or watch new movies on demand at home or play computer games and on and on and on...

Things change.

MLB should go look at how the NFL has run their league with the salary cap it is the best run league period. They should get a cap going and if the players dont like it let them strike I really dont give a s*** cause in reality there is no other job any of them can do and make the money they make. When they realize that then they will come crawling back real fast. They should strike even if it means missing a whole season of baseball I would be fine with it if it meant that a cap was in place and the teams like the yankthese wouldnt be able to buy their way into the playoff every year. Baseball would become a much more enjoyable sport once again with a fair playing field. Just my thoughts

Basically I agree with you. In years that they have considered going on strike, people have asked me what I thought, cause I go to so many Sox games. My answer has always been if they go on strike I hope it lasts years, to get the game more balanced between the players and owners. But the owners have never had the balls for it.

In a strike situation, as long as the owners stand together, the players can never win.

Most of the owners in baseball, as in other sports, have made their money off of things outside of baseball. To them, baseball is a "sport".

Even Reinsdorf one of the cheapest owners, made his money from real estate, not baseball.

Once the players strike, they will soon find out that they have no marketable asset besides for playing baseball.

Sure A-Rod will hold out for his $20mil a year contract, but with out baseball where is he even going to be paid 6 figures?

Most players are ill suited for anything else but baseball, many of them never even went to College, or graduated.

The sad thing is, if the players were smart, they would start to talk to MLBPA and tell them they should initiate salary cap talks.

Now this seems counter intuitive, but if the players ask for a salary cap at say $90-$100mil, they will see there salaries go up.

Since most teams are below $90mil, players will actually get more money. Teams like the White Sox will be forced to spend $90mil because no fans will accept that the rest of the teams are spending $90, and Reinsdorf is not.

Look at the NFL and NBA, almost every team is at or above the salary cap.

The players wont have to worry about "soft" markets, or about collusion, because they will always know teams are going to spend to the salary cap.

If the players asked for a salary cap, I think the owners would jump on it. And if it was high enough, they would profit.

::Shrugs;:

While I dont hope for a strike, I do hope for parity and instead of money being everything, skill and talent finally making a difference.
