Not sure if I heard it here or on the radio, but apparently the Bears have never fired a head coach during the season.

They’re also cheap as f***. So yeah, Eberflus has all season to destroy the team’s future.

So it really looks like Caleb will have to learn a totally new offense under a totally new coaching staff in the offseason. The Bears are really setting this kid up for success. Not ideal. Not ideal at all.

I think an only a personnel situation like last year with the DC or some sort of off the field issue would get them both canned.  Bears don’t fire people in season

There is no possible way you fire Flus in the season barring like a scandal.  He isn't awful - but he's also not great.  If you had Kingsbury or something and you were convinced you had the greatest thing since sliced bread (not saying Kingsbury is that - he had his flaws as a HC with Arizona - but to his credit he's doing an excellent job with Washington) than I could buy it.

But if you just canned Flus mid-season, what are you going to do, hire Waldron as the HC?  Talk about spiraling out of control.  Flus is bad out of byes - but he's also been pretty good at keeping his team focused following a loss.  I still go back to - you had mediocre in-house and could have hired great (Harbaugh) and they passed.

They went cheap and stayed on the cheap.  Poles and Warren want to be the face of the organization and you can't be that with a legitimate head coach.

I think that is 100% true.  I think if they weren't on the wrong cycle and instead were hiring everyone from scratch Harbaugh would have been here with a new GM.  But I wish Poles would have been like - this is a chance to form a partnership that can last 5-10 years and than we are on a glidepath for him to take the next successor and really have a long term path.

More than anything though - I hope Flus shows us that his steady hand actually works (cause I do think he's pretty calm in the face of chaos - which there is value to over the course of a season and multiple years) cause I don't want to recycle it.

Man do I hate hearing Flus talk after games like this where his coaching mistakes bear out in the result

https://nypost.com/2024/10/28/sports/matt-eberflus-mocked-for-dumbest-comment-after-hail-mary-disaster/

“Chicago’s head coach, after witnessing the Washington Commanders top his Bears in spectacular fashion on Sunday, told reporters that the play immediately preceding the game-winning, buzzer-beating Hail Mary “doesn’t really matter.”

I hate that Caleb will once again have to feel the wrath of the Bears once again pulling a Bears and relearning an entirely different system, essentially wasting his rookie year but Ben Johnson is a guy you hire and don't look back.

Hell, if Poles wants to soften the blow some, at least seriously look at Kliff Kingsbury since Caleb has been in his system for years in college.

If only it wasn’t so fucking predictable and everyone didn’t feel like the last season late season pseudo-run to respectability meant more than it did

Man, this loss absolutely changed all perspective on Flus nationally.

He added a lot of fuel to the fire in the last 24 hours with what he said postgame and on Monday, along with what others said.

Not only did he take no accountability for really anything, but he now has players coming out in the media actively questioning his coaching decisions. Then Jaylon Johnson went on The Score yesterday and said this:

Quote

“At the end of the day, we need to do things better, have a better operation throughout the week, a better way of detailing things. At the end of the day, we’ve got to take that from practice into the game and ultimately make the plays we need to make to win the games that we need to win.”

Now that's also on the players, but it doesn't reflect well on the coaching staff either, and you add on the absolute unforgivable mistakes Flus made on Sunday...the vibe TOTALLY shifted.

Good, cause we've all known his weakness as a coach this entire time. He gets to hide behind his defense being good, but that's where most of our cap space is allocated. It better be good.

My issue with Eberflus has always been that it seemed like the players don't really respect him. His coaching style doesn't command respect and the Tyrique Stevenson thing was the straw that broke the camel's back for a lot of people.

Absolutely. If that disaster of a game is setting in motion the end of Flus, then it will all be worth it for Ben Johnson.

This is the fourth game Eberflus has blown with a 90%+ win probably in the 4th quarter. He's a great DC but he just doesn't have it as an HC.  And Shane Waldron has had a few good series in games, bbut mainly, woof.

That last play was a gut punch of a loss at first, but man really what a perfect Bears game. An offense that is just painful to watch, and a defense that drags the other top-end offense down into the mud and makes a national late-game audience get to experience Classic Bears Football.

Eberflus absolutely should have been fired in the offseason to give the team a clean slate with the #1 pick. Here's hoping they do the right thing this January.

Waddle and Silvy had ESPN Stats and Research run the numbers, based on those 4 games and where the win percentage was in the 4th quarter. I don’t totally understand the equation you would use, but the stat guys came back with the odds of that happening were well over 1 in a million.

Think of it as you were 2 out of 100 in each of the games. Multiply the 2x4 and you get 8 on the top of the equation. 100x4 is a big ass number on the bottom…there are your odds in it happening 4 times.

Now in fairness that is ignoring the other games where they might have had similar odds and won.

If they had similar odds of losing and won those games 4 times, either ESPN's odds are terrible, or you'd have a reputation as making incredible comebacks. I don't think they do.

I meant games where they had 97% odds at one point and ended up winning...not the other way around.

For the statistics to work out, they’d have to win roughly a million of those for this to not be weird.

I hope they addressed not only Tyrique Stevenson's hail mary problem but also being a guy who tries to poke people through their mask. He got what he deserved. It's just sad it was at the Bears expense. That poking people through the mask s%*# should have been shut down the first time it happened. I know its been at least 2 times now he did that. I was onboard with giving Eberflus this year but now I am good with moving on.
