Only thing that concerns me about Johnson is just how good the Lions offensive line is. Is he as good as advertised or is the line covering up a lot of stuff?

Well they need to upgrade the line this off-season anyways. All of Poles' big signings should be on the defensive or offensive line.

I was going to start a new topic "The Bears" but I didn't want to get buried by those on here who hate new threads. ... So here is my take. The firing of the Bears coach is ridiculous.

So it makes a whole city (those who follow sports) feel better. Big deal. The Bears' problems have little to do with coaching. They have to do with talent and talent evaluation. I'm sure the no name stiffs who coach the Bears including Matt Eberflus are the same as most of the no name coaches in the league. They are OK. Let's face it. No coaches have a good command on clock management. They all choke on that part of the game. So at least judge the Bears ho-hummers on other areas that matter a bit. Clock management? Name a coach who knows what he's doing in that regard on any level. They all fail at it including Eberneezer.

So the Bears continue the parade of coaches since Ditka. Big deal. There are no coaches out there who are going to cure what ails the Bears. This time maybe they should hire some young young young guy like Arizona State's coach or go the oppo way and hire some 70 year old timer like Belichick. Hiring some no name coordinator of the Lions or some team will mean NOTHING. Matt Eberflus or 5 other no names cannot cure what ails the Bears. ... But everybody feels better in starting over after yesterday's turkey day debacle. Great. Still won't win a Super Bowl. There's only one Andy Reid. Might as well try Belichick this time. But the Bears would never do that. They'd never hire somebody who actually has won before somewhere.

This is where I realized greg was trolling us.  Again.

Respond to my statement that the only thing this firing does is satisfies/quiets the fans who are so mad about the end of the two games this season. One was blind luck. Yesterdays ... the analyticians who like/love draft picks should be happy we lost anyway. Bears were not gonna make the playoffs if they kicked the field goal yesterday and won in OT. Now they get a better draft pick prolly. Eberneezer is that bad a coach?? Our savior QB has a lot of work to do. He's no lock at greatness which reflects badly on the GM not coach Eberneezer. I'm not trolling. I'm just mad the Bears stink again and management thinks firing him means something positive. It means nothing.

The most offensive thing about this post is being so out of touch with anything going on with the Bears, but using the term “our”

From Brad Briggs column tonight at the Tribune:

Only six teams have fewer wins since the start of the 2011 season, when George McCaskey became chairman. Even in their meandering quest to find a franchise quarterback, the Bears have mostly avoided direct comparisons to some of the perennial losers in that bunch, such as the New York Jets, Cleveland Browns, Las Vegas Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars.

Then, in the final 32 seconds of Thursday’s nationally televised game in Detroit, they became the butt of jokes around the league and were pilloried by the most even-handed analysts.

"Then came the end-of-game situation against the Lions. If you have said you've never seen something like that before, you are right. OptaSTATS said that over the past 30 NFL seasons, in 1,501 instances, there was only one team that lost by three or fewer points and run a play inside the opponents' 30 on their final drive, but had the clock expire without trying a field goal or using all their timeouts. That was the Bears on Thursday.

Eberflus had the worst record among all 221 coaches in NFL history with 20 or more games decided by seven or fewer points, according to Associated Press' Josh Dubow. Eberflus was 5-17 in those close games. It can't be chalked up to bad luck, either."

Doesn’t deserve a real response.  It’s just so so so so bad that it doesn’t deserve a response.  Ignorance, trolling, out of touch, whatever the f*** it is…does not deserve a real response.

Lipman's post right above yours would suggest otherwise. The coach is not the problem. You show me a good clock management coach. They don't exist. Obviously embarrassing the Bears on Turkey Day and again having a miserable record in year three arguably is a good reason to get rid of Eberflus. I'm just saying he and his staff aren't the problem. And the end of that other game was a true fluke. Again a fireable offense in year three to lose on a Hail Mary? Sure but the problems go much deeper. Not sure why my comments on this issue are deemed so sad sack and pitiful by you guys. What if these two things happened to a first-year coach? Would you want him fired too?

If Eberflus is that bad, that miserable of a coach as the yahoo report suggests, then the guy who hired him should be canned as well. My contention is he's just another guy, not as bad as a Bevington or a Pedro, just another football guy, and good luck with the next offensive or defensive coordinator that gets hired by the woebegone Bears. Might as well hire Belichick if you want a serious program builder.

Presumably he has played a role in developing some of those guys. He was passing game coordinator in 2021 and that was the year they drafted Sewell, and this is his third year as OC, so figuring out ways to make his OLine play well and look good is a part of his job. Presumably he would have been involved in drafting Gibbs and signing Montgomery and those have worked well.

Yeah I’d just keep pointing to the lions regime inherited Ragnow and Decker, then drafted Sewell year 1. That year they had st brown, much of that offensive line, Goff, swift, and tj hockenson.

Anthony Lynn was the OC and their offense was terrible.

Johnson takes over and their PPG goes from 19.1 under Lynn to 26.6 under Johnson and hasn’t looked back.

I’m not working around the paywall, but why the hell would they mention the Bears being better than six teams, and then only mention four by name?

I’m gonna guess it includes the lions or some teams not associated as losers anymore.

It’s funny comparing Kwesi operate in MN compared to poles. He inherited an underperforming roster with star power, has honestly drafted pretty terribly, but nailed coaching and has been amazing in FA.

Kwesi interviewed Harbaugh and KOC and chose KOC.

Poles chooses to stick with the worst hiring org in sports top 3 and hires flus over Dan Quinn.

They were both top finalists for bears GM position and feels like they are inverse of each other.

Damn if this doesn’t show how important coaching is to success in nfl tho.

It’s all coming out now

https://t.co/UweCpOwPcX

This postgame message required a different tone, a different vibe, and probably a different voice. Like a lot of Bears players, Johnson had had enough. Sick of finding new ways to give games away, they wanted accountability and answers.
“Jaylon went crazy,” one Bears player said. “He was very emotional and pissed but rightfully so. He’s been here longer than most.”
Said another player: “He was going off more so at (Eberflus).”

Players accepted that, but what didn’t sit well with some team leaders was Eberflus avoiding accountability for his own coaching errors. Players pointed to the play before the Hail Mary. Eberflus allowed Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels to complete a 13-yard pass on the penultimate play and then didn’t call a timeout before the Hail Mary to discuss his defense and calm emotions.
When he was asked about it by reporters, Eberflus downplayed the importance of Daniels’ 13-yard completion to receiver Terry McLaurin and even double-downed on his decision, which many believe was among the mistakes.
“That didn’t sit well in the locker room,” a player said.
“It didn’t go over right,” the second player said. “That week is when he lost the defensive guys.”

It’s hard for me to understand why he continued to double down on the errors as if the thought process was always correct it was just the performance that messed it up.  He would kind of waffle and say “well I’m the head coach so it’s on me” but it was like a last second mea culpa every time he would say it, and it never meant anything because we never actually saw accountability.

It’s a bad look on the players to basically quit after the Washington game, but if you’ve been at any job for 2-3 years and your boss and leader has shown over and over again he’s incompetent, I can see how frustration boils over.

The Cardinals and Patriots were absolutely quit games on both sides of the ball. The Patriots were just too terrible to be able to score more than 19.

I refuse to take you seriously and waste my time acting like you are.  Either you are a complete idiot about sports (to which we both know why you aren't) or you are intentionally playing stupid.

Better late than never. So who is the next milquetoast stiff this dysfunctional organization will hire in order to fire two or three years later?

Takes a real man's coach to call an effing time out.  Gotta go back 40+ years to some of those end-of-game sequences under QB Bob Avellini for something like this one.
