I would say the only exception would be if you want a HC that will sit an equal or higher in the pecking order as the GM (say Shanahan). Otherwise, you’re undermining your GM for no real reason. bmags
I feel like the rapaport report is in a little bit of aggregation telephone. I feel like his point was to affirm that poles was not getting fired. Yes it is technically warrens search since he’d be signing off and part of the process, not sure he meant to imply Kevin is leading it

This - the only scenario I see here is if you are Poles maybe you don’t go for Vrabel or Beli (or last year Harbaugh) cause they would bring more power and thus you prefer the greener candidates. This allows that scenario to be off the table but it also shows a lack of trust.
Lip Man 1
A litany of incompetence: Eberflus was a problem, but he wasn’t the only one. A franchise that has won only six playoff games since its 1985 Super Bowl season has issues that go far deeper. Chairman George McCaskey, president/CEO Kevin Warren and Poles have been entrusted to fix them. That’s troubling, given that they let them fester in the first place. Warren appears no closer to finding a home for the Bears’ new stadium — or anyone to pay for it — than he was when he started in April 2023. Poles is expected to remain in his role next season, but he flubbed his initial hire of Eberflus. And the Bears have yet to win a playoff game in McCaskey’s 13 years as chairman. https://chicago.suntimes.com/bears/2024/12/01/bears-fire-matt-eberflus-caleb-williams-risks-stunting-growth-missteps-shane-waldron-luke-getsy-ryan-poles

Milkman delivers
I know it’s a while away, but give me a Bills-Lions Super Bowl. No matter what, a long-suffering fanbase finally gets their championship. Having said that, it’ll be Chiefs-Eagles or something.

I know it didn't matter last year, but really hope some of these chiefs issues cause some losses and buffalo can get home field advantage. Incredibly impressed by Sean McDermott's work this year (and once again great job by beane in drafting and keeping that defense at a high level). It appears Beane did what Cincy could not, partly by putting it all on allen (who delivered) while delivering on defense for them.

There is definitely something to the pattern of "Chiefs late game calls" happening this year.

Stadium thing seems to be no further along and is predicated on who they can shake down the most at the government level. They should have brought in someone with IL government ties then for that role like a Lisa Madigan. The fact that Waldron won the job over Kingsbury or Arthur Smith is a bad look and retaining Eberflus is another bad look. Poles can hang on to the Massive Carolina trade for another year maybe two before his seat gets hot and Warren another 5+
Lip Man 1
Interesting that McCaskey didn't say one word during the presser despite being specifically asked to do so by the Sun-Times. Tony
Poles did NOT come off well in that presser. He sounded and felt very small, the presser made it seem like Warren is in charge, which is troubling since he really shouldn't be the decision maker in football decisions, but seems like he very much will be

bmags
I unno, keep hearing we need a football guy to make decisions, etc. Poles had a lot more info than us on Shane Waldron. It was acceptable for us to be like "wow he made geno smith work". But then 10 minutes of our beat writers asking other beat writers and players about shane waldron set off major red flags. We didn't get to interview him, a football guy did. Bears fans saw flus and thought immediately "HITS is stupid and he's a longtime defensive coordinator who has held good not great defenses, pass. We'll take harbaugh or mcdaniel or flores or daboll (bad one)". They had more football insight than us. Maybe just a guy who is extremely vain and wants to tack to public opinion will in fact get it right because the public has so often been more right than the bears. I am really struggling to think of a time the bears zigged when fans wanted them to zag and they were found to be more savvy and insightful. Well, ok. Kyle Long. That's really it.

Poles stunk at picking the coach (to extent he actually picked Flus or actually chose to keep Flus). And he was clearly involved in Waldron and others coordinators and that didn't work. Warren is arrogant - which can be good or bad - but he doesn't want to take half measures - he wants to be successful and I think he is more likely to basically rip things to ground if he doens't think its working, etc. He might end up being too inpatient and I won't pretend that he has accomplished much - but his attitude / ego is very different than Phillips for example and I think that means he is going to go full stop to do what he thinks is best. Where as I think Poles wanted to be right - but his way. I don't know - watch Poles step down or something real crazy.

Just because Poles might not be the guy or as smart as we thought doesn't mean a "football guy" shouldn't be making "football" decisions. Kevin Warren has accomplished a lot in his career, but they are business related victories. Paul DePodesta certainly seemed like a very bright baseball mind...based on his tenure with the Browns, I wouldn't want him making decisions for my football team. If I have a guess with Poles somber attitude, he may have been trying to hit the right tone of respecting that a bunch of the coaches in there are likely gone after this year rather than showing confidence but it contrasted poorly. He should be licking his paws, his choice of coach absolutely wasted this year and quite frankly wasted a playoff year last year. It wasn't a good playoff year, but it would have easily been one without terrible collapses against browns/broncos/lions.

I think your one example actually has a much better hit rate than most football guys. The browns have been in the playoffs in 2 of the last 4 seasons after an 18 year drought. He has been a part of a pretty respected front office that included kwesi adofo mensah who they recruited. "Who seems good" would be an underrated improvement for the bears. Who seems good applied to Lovie. Would have applied to Arians (would have actually gotten us Reid, he seemed pretty good). It probably did apply to Wanny, Fox, and Nagy. But it would have avoided Flus, would have avoided Jauron. That's about as good a hit rate as any football guy. Bears should try it imo.
