I never heard that they offered to reopen it

i feel like it must have been hoge and jahns podcast but boy is it hard to search the athletic. So I can't prove that, but this was from the latest. Re-open, don't know, but over and over again we hear that it was poles choice.
"

To be clear, Eberflus was never forced on Poles — at least not by anyone employed at Halas Hall. The two share representation in agent Trace Armstrong and, per Poles’ account, had become friendly after meeting years back through mutual acquaintances.

Eberflus also came highly recommended in 2022 by Colts GM Chris Ballard, who spent 12 seasons in the Bears organization (2001-12) and also worked with Poles for four years with the Kansas City Chiefs (2013-16).

Also don’t forget that the Bears’ 2022 coaching search was spearheaded by an outside consultant: Bill Polian, whose 14 seasons in the Colts organization left him, for better or worse, with deeper connections inside that franchise."

C'mon now, who wouldn't want to emulate the Colts?

For Carroll’s camp to leak out this information actually gives me a ton of optimism. He wouldn’t be willing to come out of retirement if he didn’t believe in Caleb and the possibility of quickly turning this mess around. This isn’t just some generic, “Pete Carroll wants to coach in 2025” statement open to every team. At 73 years old, he wouldn’t be here to oversee a rebuild.

Depending on what his demands are, I’d be willing to put him right at the top alongside Johnson. Especially since his name carries the respect to have some part in roster construction.

I know, I know, the Shane Waldron connection; and he’s a defensive minded coach who would have to find yet another OC for Caleb. But guys…..who are we to turn him down? He is a proven winner who created a winning culture over his 14 seasons.

Are we going to be the team that overlooks Harbaugh and Carroll in back to back seasons?

It is a good reminder when you see Stroud and Bryce Young, that qb development is not linear. Young looked awful for a while and is now trending up. Stroud still looks awesome - but he has come back to earth a bit as well (whether due to injuries of others or league adjusting).

I just know Caleh having 4 300 yard games when being almost given no freebies/simple stuff from his coordinators is impressive. I hope we see him stack another strong game tomorrow!

Wouldn’t be my first choice, but they should have a conversation with a dozen candidates.

To your point, they should interview a bunch of candidates to learn from them and cast a wide net in their search.

I paused when I thought of Carroll. His age is something I considered, but isn’t a dealbreaker. I want a coach with actual head coaching experience if possible. If that person does not have experience, then I would need to see someone be a standout coordinator like Ben Johnson. If they went the Lovie Smith esque route they better have a plan for Caleb Williams instead of a variety of different offensive coordinators. This was something they dealt with during the Cutler years.

Would Lincoln Riley come along as Carroll’s OC? I really wonder if that’s the sales pitch. You have a lot of parts here that connect with Riley, Carroll and Williams.

If I was Carroll, and knew Poles was desperate, I’d throw out the idea of immediate success. “We can save your job and turn this around right away! I’ll rebuild the culture and have a hand in the defense, Riley will work with Williams.”

Why would Poles care what happens three years down the line? Or if Riley leaves the following season? The man is trying to survive.

Ben Johnson is personally still my number one choice. But I really believe that Carroll has a shot

If you were Lincoln Riley would you leave College head coach money behind to be an OC in the NFL?  Dude makes 11 million a year at USC, unless his seat is hot I have to think that is a really dumb move for him

Edit:  for context, the highest paid OC in the NFL makes 3 million a year.  I can’t imagine him leaving 8M on the table

You wouldn’t leave USC, unless you were forced out and took a massive 80+ million buyout. Then OC pay isn’t a factor.

His seat is definitely hot. USC has lost momentum as a program recently and a huge amount of players are transferring out.

I don’t know if it’s hot enough to throw away 80 million to be rid of him, though

If he is fired or will be fired, and he is looking for a soft landing spot and wants to get his work on nfl tape, I could understand it.  It’s a lot of money there for that university to eat like you said

Yeah I only see it if he is fired from USC and I would imagine if that were going to happen it already would have.

I've never seen a team need a bigger culture reset than this. And I'm including the White Sox in that. This is just pathetic.

Absolutely. Missed tackles, broken tackles on the defense. Keenan dropping passes, Odunze giving maybe 50% on a catchable throw, Moore cutting out of bounds one yard short of the 1st down. We’ve seen for awhile what it looks like when a team has given up
