But if you're basing your opinion on what has been reported, Russini (same outlet as Courtney) reported this on Jan 8th:

Seemingly, that has held true for the first 10 interviews the Bears have completed, including candidates like Pete Carroll, who had nothing stopping him from meeting in person for the first round of interviews.

What changed with McCarthy? This is his first interview with the Bears, yet he's the only one that has been flown in. That's not nothing.

The fact that they made him a round 2 candidate is notable, the plane is less so. He's clearly viewed as a top candidate, but there is also that Waddle said it was McCarthy that requested an in-person. McCarthy has an agent too, so smart move.

That said, nearly every single national guy save schefter is starting to circle johnson to the raiders. Such a freakin annoying thing. Bears are always so arrogant for being so terrible.

Yeah, I heard the report yesterday that it sounds like McCarthy requested the in person, so I agree that it’s maybe less “intense” than I previously believed…but I still think he’s the favorite right now for a number of different reasons, and I agree with the sentiment that they are going to screw up this process in regards to Johnson. McCarthy won’t be a terrible hire, but it’s not the best they could do. Welcome to being a sports fan in Chicago.

I feel like at the end we'll be sad we didn't get mccarthy 🫥

I feel like it'll be like Drew Pentzig. I don't think they'd go for rivera but I'm terrified it will be David Shaw. Maybe that dude could get great assistants, but i unno.

Monken is definitely the most interesting to me because I can't figure out why I don't like him more, but I think a lot of it has to do with Daboll. But that's pretty dangerous because coach resumes do not equal much when comparing them. But he reminds me a little bit of an offensive 'fangio' if that makes sense. Then again - feels like you look at a Fangio era broncos and are like "they expected him to make the playoffs with drew lock and trevor semien?" Poor guy.

I see it differently, and maybe I’m giving the Bears more credit than they deserve, but god help us if that’s the case.

Reports have indicated early the interest on both sides with Johnson. I still contend that from an objective standpoint, the situation in Chicago is better than Vegas.

I do think there would be concern inside HH that they don’t feel 100% comfortable with hiring an unproven candidate like Johnson, him suffering the same fate as Nagy, Eberflus, etc. Which would then shift to McCarthy. Not as exciting, and lower ceiling than Johnson, but higher floor, feels like you know what you’re getting.

I know we aren’t inside the room, but I just don’t see any assistant being more attractive than Johnson. Doesn’t mean a guy like Monken can’t have success, but Johnson has been the No. 1 name out there for a while, and if they really do have interest in both McCarthy and Johnson, I don’t see them striking out on both.

Option C of course is we have no idea what the hell is going on and they end up with David Shaw and believe they are smarter than everyone else, and we all suffer as a result.

I really think it is Johnson or McCarthy at this point and I think the Bears should be able to get either one - or at least be in drivers seat, unless they wait way too long and/or aren't willing to spend the money.  McCarthy and Johnson are both going to be more than your standard coaching hire.

I will also notate - if I were McCarthy or Johnson, I would be wanting to meet with Caleb for a long time. I'm hitching my wagon to this QB, I want to meet with front office and ownership, obviously, but I also think part of my diligence would be doing a Jon Gruden QB camp style thing with the QB just getting to know how he ticks, watching film with him, chatting with him, getting to know who he is.

Different if a guy is 5 years in the league and enough contacts - this guy is 1 year into the league and McCarthy / Johnson both have the juice to have that sort of discussion / interview...really making sure they are the right fit on this.  I know this doesn't happen often - but if I were those coaches I'd go that route and push for it cause I can.

This would also lead to that going the opposite direction.  If Caleb likes someone way more than someone else, how much weight do you put into that?

I would say that getting some guy to get on your page who may not want to be on your page has got to be like an A1 skill for a good coach.

However my true A1 is just finding a coach that can give us an edge in playcalling/offensive strategy so we are finally not on backfoot.

I think with Johnson, we’re going to have to wait until he’s available for a second interview if Detroit is still in it after this weekend. I view McCarthy having an in person interview as a good thing so they could get actual face time with him before he interviews elsewhere.

Like Tony, I don’t objectively think the Raiders are a better spot than the Bears. They lack the quarterback and don’t have a top 1 or 2 pick. I’m not sure that their roster is as built up like the Bears are. Sure, Brady is an owner there but their ownership has its own issues (just like the Bears).

NFL moves so fast though. Last year we all thought the bears roster was miles better than the Commanders, and now...

this guy has been pulling a lot of social weight this offseason...always seemed like more of a draft guy. That said that's just so horrifying to read. I sure would like that GM who led the commanders FA run that led to a bunch of productive players over ryan poles who gave a bunch of money to Gerald Everett.

there's just no way for me to exist in all of this without being just so so mad lol

I’m still not sure why Brady is viewed as a plus.  He was an awesome QB, but what does he bring to the table in his current role?  It’s possible he helps right the ship over there but it’s all speculation at this point.

Said it before but he’d be the exact same role Johnson just saw help turn around Detroit in Spielman. He’s a former player with no explicit role who just makes sure good football people are there
