Andrew Vaughn

He's better than you give him credit for. He doesn't suck. He is what he is, a .250ish hitter with a little pop. Possibly the best hitter on this team. Plus, he is not lazy in the field like Rizzo was last night in the World Freaking Series. Who do you have in mind to replace him?

Andrew Vaughn being the best bat on the worst hitting team in baseball history  is not some sort of accolade.  The reality is he’s a roughly league average hitter who plays a bad 1B and is one of the slowest baserunners in baseball.  That is a negative value baseball player and we now have +2,200 PAs to confirm it.  Full stop, we should never settle for a below replacement level player just because there isn’t an obvious replacement.  It’s the GM’s job to figure out a way to get better production than that and that’s exactly a tall ask.

If they can't get a league average hitting prospect as a 3rd or 4th piece of a Crochet or Robert trade, just platoon Elko and Sheets. Elko/Colas would probably be better.

Colas? Like he would ever get regular AB’s at the big league level….

Illogically, it seems like the Sox would be more likely to sign Maldonado to play 1B than give Colas regular AB’s at first base, under the guise of infield defensive leadership or some s%*#.

Is Colas bad? He seems to have put up numbers over time. Tanked 2024. My first thought was always to just slide Sosa over to 1st if he keeps hitting, but he's the same height as Vaughn. The 2025 1B may not even finish the year with the team. The only 1B I can squint and see in the pipeline is DJ Gladney. Struck out less than 25% of his PAs at AA (SSS, I know).

LOL Jjust LOL!   Does the trade deadline mean anything?

Getz trading Crochet and Robert is something every fan should fear.

Lame analogies are:

Haul - doesn't happen in an injury prone sport

They aren't going to win anything with them anyway.   Well who is the next star for that rinse and repeat.

People follow these theories of baseball but never question the results.  If they worked the league would be a lot better.

Those myths reveal an organization's ability to scout and develop.

Follow those myths baseball fans, Follow the myths.

These 1st round failures were under the former farm director.

Your best hitters don't even have a 3rd of their success at the plate.

They need to do other things like catch a baseball and also be valuable on base,

This is way the Sox have operated for a long time.  Look some of their free agent signings.

No idea. Seems like this org is dead set against letting Colas get any plate appearances at the big league level - that was more my intent with my post.

I don't know if it's not being able to be coached, or bad clubhouse/field presence. It's just my opinion that if they have somebody who might top out at a 95 RC+, play him and save the $2.6 million Sheets will probably earn.

Anyone but Sheets would be a start.

It’s a stuffed doll.  It can’t die.

If a stuffed doll was posting that would be a valid argument. But a human is posting and the human's reaction is either "I'd rather be dead" or "I'd rather see a stuffed doll jump off a building".

One of those choices is hopefully hyperbole the other is kind of weird.

Vaughn is terrible.  He’s a .725 OPS first baseman with a weak glove.  Rizzo is .103 points higher in OPS in his career than Vaughn.  It’s not even close.

The “best hitter on the this team” doesn’t mean much considering they are all bad.

Replace him with a turnstile for all I care.  Vaughn isn’t worth $3 million, much less $6 million.

Gleyber Torres is the one with the lazy play in the first place…blaming Rizzo for its pretty rich.

Torres missed it, and he was charged an error. All I said was that if Rizzo were backing up the play the way every other first baseman does, he picks up the loose ball and there is no advancement.

And you couched it by saying the far inferior defensive player, Andrew Vaughn, makes that play.  Which is garbage analysis

i think if We had any sort of bat at RF and 3rd base we could keep Vaughn in the lineup batting 8th, i could accept that.   Yes, he’s no where close to what an acceptable first baseman should be, beit he would be acceptable.

Honestly, no he wouldn’t be. If the team was actually better around him he’d be viewed as an unacceptable weak link and an easy place to upgrade. We’d at least be trying to find replacements for him at the deadline, or making him a full platoon then nontendering him in the offseason.

A good example of this is Houston. Their plan A at 1b, Abreu, flopped big time. They had minimum salary guy Jon Singleton in their org and he took over as a replacement level player once Abreu was cut. this made them better, but they also kept playing their catchers, rookies, and injured players like Bregman there to try to find production. They will probably keep Singleton around this offseason because he’s at a minimum salary, but that’s probably their number 1 position to upgrade since an average 1b is a big upgrade that won’t cost a lot.

Vaughn is an interesting study. Once in a while he gets hot and rakes. He's had over 500 at bats three years in a row now with RBI totals of 70, 80 and 76. Strike out totals are ridiculous at 132, 129 and 96. Batting averages of .246 last year, .258 and .271. Obviously he's one of those guys trying to hit a homer every at bat thus he's an abject failure in that regard with just 19 HRs last season and career high of 21 homers. His production may be blah but the Sox will have to replace some of his production next season as he's probably the best hitter in the Sox horrible lineup as it stands.
