Jerry Reinsdorf open to selling the White Sox per Britt Ghiroli

Recommended Posts

The White Sox had a record of 857-764 in the decade of the 2000s, good for 5th best in the AL and 9th best in MLB. They had 3 playoff appearances and one title. This is pretty good, it’s not the Yankees but for the money they spent it’s damned effective. The next two teams behind them in records are the Giants and Phillies. The Phillies won a title that no one considers a fluke, despite performing worse for the decade than the White Sox. The Giants soon after broke through with 3 titles. That performance level should be a regularly competitive team.

They coulda had more playoff appearances but the team with the 4th most AL wins that decade, the Twins, blocked them several times. They imploded themselves more than they should have, with years like 2007 and coaching problems, but for a mid-tier revenue franchise it’s darn respectable and a breakthrough title fits with their level of play.

Also, 2005 was fluke-y: They were great. Assembled in a way that made JR and Kenny think they were the smartest guys in the room.

Yeah that basically sums it up for me.

 - The title was great as a fan.

 - The team was legitimately great for that season. (You can’t really argue with going wire to wire in the regular season, then dominating the postseason.)

 - That team was also a fluke in the greater context of things.

 - That team also further solidified JR’s belief that doing things his way was the correct way, thus setting the organization up to be the failure that it has been since.

All of these things can be true at the same time.

You mean 2000-2009 here I think...bssically all the KW teams except for 2010/12/Adam Dunn.

It’s more important for me to support a system of team building that sustainable. A freak occurrence 2005 has no value to a fan like myself. It’s fine. But you pair it with a thousand years of ineptitude, f*** that. Who cares about 2005 it just highlights the gross incompetence of this franchise that it’s never going to be repeated because it was an accident, a bug, not a feature. You can have it.

The 2000s were great. The team had a lot of talent, and they actually won something.  But everything fell apart after that. Ozzie did his disappearing act in 2011 when they should have fired his ass. Then there was the strange hiring of Robin Ventura who looked clueless. Things only worsened since then. Hard to believe how far this franchise has fallen. And it can't get up.

You’re soft. You are easy. And a victim. You are a mark. You’ve got Jerry Reinsdorf dancing with his $800 leather shoes on top of your head, and that’s somehow what you enjoy. Being taken advantage of is not my bag baby. I’ll let you do that.

Lots of teams have done that and not won a damn thing. Knocking 2005 is bullshit stuff.

It belongs in the dumbass sports fan hall of fame.

Dynasties are difficult to create in baseball compared to die nasty. How does one now define a dynasty in baseball ?

90's Braves...but only one World Series title in that era, right?

mid to late 90's Yankees...that's the closest you're going to get in MLB in the "modern" era

then the current Braves run since wherever you want to backdate it to, with just one more title?

Dodgers from 2013 through today, but only one World Series victory and that was the Covid year

So we're basically left with the Chiefs and Patriots in the NFL...almost an impossible bar or standard

his attempt to extort the taxpayers for public funding on a new stadium.

As taxpayers, who fkn cares if they extort us? They waste billions of dollars a day on stupid things. It's never ending and only going one way.

At least this time we get a brand new stadium... what's the problem?

If our corporate billionaire doesn't get those dollars, another one will.  It's not like anyone will see a tax cut if the block Jerry here.

Theres no way this is a serious response.  It’s gotta be a weak attempt at satire correct?

Deadly serious. Since when does the State of Illinois care about spending money they don't have at the expense of 'taxpayers'? Drop in the ocean. Might as well get a new stadium this time.

The city of Chicago has an ADB of almost 2 billion sitting around in TIF dollars.  This kind of spending is very normal.

The whole city has $2.6 billion and has added $1.3 billion over the 5 year period shown there, but $1.8 billion on a single project would be normal? That seems like 10x the city commitment of the other projects listed.

That's their average daily balance, not their annual budget. This is also a separate taxing body.  But this is far from the only billions spent.  He'll they are STILL paying Boeing, who is gone.

There’s a fire station in Englewood currently without a ladder truck and ambulance because the city can’t afford to fix them.  They just cancelled two consecutive police academy classes because they literally can’t afford to run them.  The state of Illinois is a single notch above junk status on its debt rating.  But yeah…let’s totally give the worst team in MLB history with a billionaire owner a bunch of public funds to build a new stadium and get richer even though he completely ripped us off on the last one.  How exactly do you think both the City and State got into this situation?

Then this page is useless for giving context on this project. If I look at your average bank balance I can’t tell anything about whether you can afford a new house.

You missed the point then.  The White Sox are far from the only billionaire handout in the City of Chicago, and far from the wealthiest. Though they are only one of a very few with a dedicated revenue stream which isn't being redirected from other city services.

How many of them got a $2 billion handout?

That's the problem. If you gave each company in Chicago that does as much business and employs as many people as the White Sox, $1 billion or $2 billion, we'd have a huge problem. I read where the Sox may not be in the top 100 in Chicago.
