But eberflus is a horrible coach and holding the team back.

He’s talking about from venables perspective, the job should have runway.

Nevin seemed like the Sox move so I’m glad it isn’t. Guy has learned under the best. Not expecting him to make this team vastly improved next year or anything, but hopefully steps in the right direction and everyone on the same page.

I hope he is being given great latitude in picking his coaching staff.

All that said, hire is meaningless as said earlier.

Who cares who the manager is for a historically inept franchise.

Hire is meaningless?  Every single move matters at this point if we ever hope to get back to even mediocrity.  This is a very nice move on paper and Sox fans should be excited accordingly.

All of this has gotten very annoying. If you are going to think everything they do is meaningless then why are you still putting yourself through this?

This is a nice hire on paper and definitely not what I expected them to do. I still don't really see any reason to be excited though, team is still ass and were all going to wait for baseball to be back only to watch another 100+ loss season. At least its a step in the right direction.

I guess were are impressed with it being unpredictable and different.

Was it the same with the Grifol hire? I haven't forget how the media talked that up.

With Getz wanting to deal Crochet and Robert for that vargas type haul,  he should be warned he may be part  of baseball history next season by losing 125 games.

Now all they need is a new GM.

In general with Grifol he was lower in KCs organization and didn’t have experience like “being Bochy’s bench coach”, there was no other team even considering Grifol at the time and there was nothing on his resume that made you think he was an obvious manager candidate. However, Grifol talked a good game at the start, almost everyone including the press was willing to give him a shot based on how awful LaRussa was, and it wasn’t until the next season started where you began to realize how over his head he was. On paper, Venable’s resume is a substantial improvement. How that will translate, we will see, and Grifol’s complete implosion should leave some skepticism.

Pleasantly surprised by this news this morning.  I really thought they'd end up with Nevin (who I didn't have as much disdain towards as others) or Sizemore.  Hiring Grady would have been the easy route, essentially saying it doesn't matter who the manager is when the team will suck for a few years.  Nevin would have been a Tony-influenced hire for sure.  Venable is a solid hire and lends some hope that they will be serious about trying to build a team.  Hiring a guy like this to manage a bunch of scrubs for three years wouldn't make much sense.

This is the biggest part for me, bringing in (seemingly) smart people from outside the insular bubble is progress.

I just overheard someone at the airport saying their cousin's podiatrist has a friend who knows a realtor in the Nashville area and they have been showing homes to Venable's wife 👀

Of the candidates out there, he definitely seemed the best. The Cleveland bench coach seemed OK, To me, if it was a tie, Venable would get my pick because he recently played. Maybe not a huge deal, but players seem to respond to it. He's basically an ivy League educated Grady Sizemore, with a lot more coaching experience.

White Sox aren't going to get back to mediocrity with a managerial hire.

No they are not. But getting the right guy here will help, eventually.

Maybe.

I have no idea if Venable is a good manager or good at developing young players and the person evaluating that ability... told me Pedro Grifol was sharp.

People here hated Renteria but he was actually good at those things.

This is a good move for multiple reasons.

However, this move is only as good if he is given the assets to work with.  He could be the best manager in the world but if you give him the roster from last year with the ineptitude of guys like Luis Robert then it really doesn't matter.

I guess this is a step in the right direction BUT I will wait to see what the product on the field looks like.

Yes, the first time in human history someone has said something positive about someone publicly before that person ultimately got fired.

Hope Sizemore gets named 1b coach. Wondering who will be his bench coach?

Venable should be able to hire his own coaching staff, the days of JR favorite ex players as coaches like Baines and Boston must come to an end along with saying goodbye to TLR.

Oh I agree completely, but I think Sizemore would be good at it. Former basestealer who is hungry to do more than just coach 1b.
