Certainly Kopech had more potential as a closer than Vargas does of showing anything resembling what we gave up to get him. Vargas doesn't even have a position.....is he a 3B, OF, SS, or just a utility player? The Sox ruined him and his arm when they pitched him in the playoffs against the A's because they were all fooled by the radar gun he was hitting. They didn't care about the damage he was doing to his arm, a pitcher straight out of college thrown into high leverage playoff games. He took time off to recover and convinced the Sox he was a starter not a reliever and we all saw what he did when given the role he was accustomed to. Sox have a tendency to play players out of position (Vaughn-Sheets) and regress their careers instead of developing them the right way. Dylan Covey just signed a major league deal with the Mets. They would typically get to perform some amount of the duties typically allotted to the actual manager.
