34 years old makes me feel incredibly ancient. His philosophy is what they need, so let's hope it works out.

Wow! Getz is advancing this organization into the 21st Century.

Getz at least seems to make good hires and want to move the organization in the right direction.

I just hope he knows how to acquire players and develop a front office structure / coaching structure that can develop players in a cohesive manner.

Why at 34 was he available?

He was recently fired as the co-hitting coach of the Baltimore Orioles.

I would like to read more on what  "director of hitting" will actually do for this organization.

My guess is that he's essentially "in charge" of hitting. He'll be the offensive equivalent to Brian Bannister.

I assume not, but any idea why he was fired?

Yes, actually. He really preaches hitting the ball in the air and swing decisions, etc. The Orioles "struggled" in the second half offensively and went out early in the playoffs and both hitting coaches took the fall. To me though, this type of role fits this guy much better than big league hitting coach.

Sounds like hitting coaches taking the fall for the Orioles heavily relying on young players, who can be streaky and struggle to adapt to pitchers changing approaches to them. Hopefully this works out well for us - would really like to hear what this role entails and what kinds of changes he makes.

I will be interested to see how this hire affects MiLB hitters. Baltimore has had some ultra good prospects, but even their org guys usually have a patient approach. Future of the org is tied to developing Bonemer and Wolkow and maybe Zavala. Hope this guy helps.

Trying to keep up with all these made up baseball positions.

Is the director of hitting in this case equivalent to the minor league hitting coordinator? Why is that desperately needed?

Lots of teams have this. It's not a minor league hitting coordinator. He's in charge of hitting for the entire organization. It's basically the same thing that Brian Bannister has been doing but for hitting.

Fuller was their minor league hitting coordinator for years and coached many of their prospects as a hitting coaching in Bowie I believe.

Getz has done more for the infrastructure of this organization in a year than his predecessor did in a decade +.  Admittedly, the comparison is a ridiculously low bar, but I think the Sox will make the playoffs prior to Getz' year 8.

Or he just has gotten much more emphatic folks to praise his press releases.

So Brian Bannister is Ethan Katz boss?
