Ryan Fuller Hired as Director of Hitting

"A source told MLB.com on Friday that co-hitting coach Ryan Fuller, bench coach Fredi González and Major League coach José Hernández will not be returning next season. The club has not yet confirmed the departures.

On Monday, a source said that co-hitting coach Matt Borgschulte will also not be back in 2025, which the club has not yet confirmed. Borgschulte will be returning to the Twins to serve as a big league hitting coach.

In 2024, Baltimore had a trio of hitting coaches: Fuller and Borgschulte, as well as offensive strategy coach Cody Asche. It is not yet known how the O’s staff will be filled out in ‘25, but Fuller and Borgschulte will both be gone."

Once again, make your own judgment.  It seems pretty obvious to me what happened, but you do you.  @Kyyle23 was right — not worth engaging.

https://www.masnsports.com/blog/fuller

Lol so because I don't see the word fired anywhere and you draw conclusions based on your personal life and apply it to baseball that make you right.

I'm just questioning if he was fired. You engaged me and Asked if I believe everything I read. You expect me to  believe you instead ? You didn't offer any special insight I hadnt already read . If people can't handle having their opinions questioned without saying don't lecture me f*** you because I use knowledge to my advantage and actually discuss instead of mock or  bully people. No wonder so many aren't posting anymore.

Whether he was fired or his contract ran out and wasn't renewed makes no difference.

All these hires are basically met with jokes and skepticism when to most objective observers in the media these are good hires Getz is making .It seems like he really trying to get more analytical info to players and hiring people who are good at making it easier for players to use.

On the CHGO podcast interview with Eric Kratz of The Foul Territory podcast he really liked the new hire from the Brewers and used examples of how that guy improved defense among some catchers not known for their defense.

I don't know what's so bad about being positive about the recent hires rather than quibbling with me over semantics of fired or didn't renew his contract, or whatever.

Guys like Vinnie Duber from CHGO and various Sox podcasts like Sox in the Basement and Future Sox praise the hiring of Fuller and the bench coach Walker McKinven. Here on Soxtalk we get more run prevention and Greg Walker jokes  than anyone taking a stab at being positive about their qualifications or what it is about them that fits in with what Getz is trying to accomplish and that's just sad.

I praised one of our posters about making a good positive observation @Boopa1219 , I think and I got 2 laugh emojis. I wasn't being sarcastic. I really liked the post and don't understand why I got laugh emojis.

Maybe McKinven will help Edgar Quero and Lee become better defensively and with framing. Crochet credits Katz and Bannister with his development and yet our posters can't ? It's just meaner and tantrumy than ever around here now.

Do you believe everything you read?  When a VP of a Fortune 500 company “retires after years of service” and has another job a month or two later, do you really believe they weren’t told to get lost?  I have seen it more times than I can count in the 8 years at my current company.  It’s called reading between the lines.  The Orioles are just doing a solid to the coaches that they got rid of so there is no negative connotation, but being “let go” means fired.  Afterall, if the Orioles front office thought those guys did such a great job, why would they let them go?

You literally agreed with @Tnetennba above that heads had to roll after another Orioles postseason flop — you replied, “more or less true”.  But now you are disagreeing with me over semantics?  Yes, they were fired…  in the nicest way possible — “let go.”  I provided you with the article.  Sorry, I can’t clear up gullibility.

The distinction of phrases like "let go", "fired", and "not brought back" are mostly meaningless to me because they are more related to contract status and press release writer than anything else.  What it comes down to is how important is this guy to your organization.  The Orioles thought that Fuller was replaceable as an assistant hitting coach.  Regardless of what termination terminology you want to attach to his change in employment, The Orioles didn't want Fuller working with their players anymore.  If they wanted him back, HE would have been the one to have to leave.  But that didn't happen. So the fact remains that the Sox hired someone that the Orioles didn't think was good enough.

That's the guy who clearly stated that we'd be fools to believe Wheeler's and his agent's own words that the White Sox offered them more money. Consider the source.

Good post.  Makes sense to me.  Especially the bolded part.  Pretty easy to comprehend.  It’s almost like common sense.

But then again, maybe Fuller was just looking for a bigger challenge and chose to leave being in charge of the Orioles lineup of good hitters and top prospects so he could coach up the White Sox lineup of pig slop.  🤣

Are you still arguing about guys the Sox didn’t sign?  Machado is probably still laughing at the Sox.

No, just offering the context that you will dig in and argue the inverse opposite of reality, then slink away when concrete proof is posted.

What is even the argument going on here? Is he a bad hire because a team went in a different direction? Hitting coaches/instructors seem to move around all of the time.

Seems like it, yeah. Hopefully Fuller recognizes that you can't turn everyone into a big power hitter and doesn't actually have a one size fits all approach even for guys like Nishida. I doubt he does, though. Sounds a little like he and other hitting coaches caught the flak for the Orioles collapsing down the stretch due to relying so much on very young talent.

Honestly, even if he's 100% everyone must lift the ball and hit for power, that's still a billion times better than the Sox current approach, which seems to be "hit the ball straight into the ground and get seriously injured running to first base".

I think it is a good hire. He has worked very successfully in Baltimore before. Yes he was fired but it was also after being promoted to a very different position.

Mlb hitting coaching is quite different from being a minor league hitting coordinator, that is much more about game planning, mental stuff and relationships to players.

As a hitting coordinator his role is to coach the coaches so that they ideally have a shared vision of what they want to teach to those kids.

We should actually be praising or congratulating ex Sox Cody Asche (banner star at SoxTalk) for surviving the Red Wedding over at the Warehouse/Camden Yards.  Must have made a really strong impression in Low A ball (Clearwater/Phillies) in 2021 to jump directly to another big league club the after just one season in the upper minors...especially since BALT doesn't even have their own team in the Florida State League to "scout" him as a coach.

wikipedia

Asche quickly progressed through the Phillies' minor league system, briefly dabbling at second base before predominantly sticking to third base and left field. At both positions, minor league scouts regarded his defensive ability as sub-optimal. His career with the Phillies ended in 2016, and he played one additional season in the Chicago White Sox organization before bouncing around several minor league organizations.

Philadelphia Phillies

On March 31, 2021, it was announced that Asche was hired as the hitting coach for the Clearwater Threshers, the Low-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies.[58]

Baltimore Orioles

Asche joined the Baltimore Orioles as the organization’s upper–level hitting coordinator beginning with the 2022 season.[59] He was promoted to manager Brandon Hyde's coaching staff as its offensive strategy coach for the 2023 season on November 8, 2022.[2]

On November 5, 2024, the Orioles named Asche their hitting coach for the 2025 season.[60]
