For the same reason that every first time home buyer is soiling themselves at closing, but in 3 years, those mortgage payments don't hurt so bad anymore. They make more money, and inflation has pushed the cost of a new home higher than when they purchased.

Not if 2008 was the end of those 3 years.

I wonder why Walker stunk last year after being pretty good the previous two seasons. He's 32 now. 7.10 ERA last season. Beni actually is one of the Sox better hitters with 20 homers a year ago. I've never liked him of course but he actually would be missed in this pathetic everyday lineup.

Not sure I saw a worse pitcher than Walker last year.

I hope this is how Getz envisions "forcing Benintendi into a Crochet deal". I could deal with foregoing a lesser piece if the return is 2 awesome prospects and taking on $9 million net Benintendi.

I still don't think there should be any urgency to get rid of Benny's contract beyond freeing up LF for prospect churn.

It’s probably more about the years and money than the performance of either Benintendi or Walker at this point.  And definitely to Jerry.

If the Bryce Harper/Manny Machado sweepstakes were happening now in 2024 and they were 27 years old, how much would they be getting?

My point being that I think 5 years from now we’re going to look at Soto’s contract as a steal, all the more reason Jerry Reinsdorf like 20 other owners should not be allowed to own a professional sports team in 2025

I don’t think this true.  Those Harper / Machado contracts were absolute steals at the time and large part due to market conditions.  Literally none of the heavy hitters were involved that offseason and that greatly suppressed bidding.  I also don’t think this Soto contract will ever be viewed as a steal.  $730M is a fuckton of money and I’m not sure a cool billion will be seen as cheap when you look at the valuations of major league post the recent regional TV collapse for many clubs.  Just my opinion though.  I do agree that Jerry needs to go 🤜🏼🤛🏿

If Soto signs tomorrow, I think there is a good chance Crochet gets dealt at the Winter Meetings this week.

Soto is expected to sign within the next 48 hours now that Willy Adames has signed with the Giants.

Good.  The more top free agents that sign ahead of the winter meetings, the more focus that will be placed on Crochet.

A lot of shoulder injuries and arm injuries in general catching up with him.

We really need Fried and Burnes to sign.

And not with Boston or Philly.

That would help no doubt, but at least with Soto off the books the market for Burnes & Fried will actually start moving and that will help Crochet talks.

Interesting. Walker's arm seems toast, but I've always been a big TW guy when he's out there (before last year) so I'd take him over bene.

Not me.

I am no sure a Crochet trade is dependent on any of these signings. FAs are flying off the shelf at really high prices. Tyler O’Neill just signed as largely the weak side of a RF platoon for $16.5 mil a year. Fried is gonna make a ton. I think there will be at least one team that would rather spend prospects than $$$$.

I’d take him for Benintendi just because it would be one less year of a bad contract.  It seems like people are missing this.  Three more years of garbage Benintendi or two more years of garbage Walker?

Benintendi does nothing for the Sox the next three years.  And how would Benintendi have to perform for some team to actually pick up most of his contract in a salary dump trade?

Exactly. Both sunk costs. One ends sooner.

One less year of a bloated contract with Walker at least.

He was the closest deal I could find in a bad contract swap for Benintendi when I looked last year. I wouldn’t hate it if there was no money exchanged. Get out a year sooner and make him a 5th starter innings eater.

Agreed.  Makes sense to me.  Also makes an opening in LF for a younger outfielder (Colas, DeLoach, etc.).
