Potential Crochet Trade discussion Thread

This is feeling like it will end up like the last 2 big trades:  Lots of teams say they want Crochet, but they won't offer much; Getz never gets a really good offer, and is stuck with taking the least sh$$$y offer right before Spring Training.

If this truly happens, it will be Getz’s fault.  Every insider has been stating how hot the interest is in Crochet.

It's not legit.

Yeah, let’s stop advertising for this garbage account.  The typical roll it back comment.  “The situation is fluid” is the most overused phrase by fake insiders everywhere.  Absolute sham city…

I was just thinking about this. Pretty much every reason we discuss about why we should trade him is an equally good reason why another team might not want to trade for him. He's an injury risk and he's due to get paid pretty soon. If you're an opposing GM, I don't think you trade for Crochet to 'build around' him, I imagine you do it because you think you can compete for a World Series right now. As such, I bet you get a return similar to what Cease netted except Cease proved to be a workhorse and much more reliable. I think Crochet is a better pitcher and he's also left-handed, plus his arb. estimate is pretty low, about 1/3 of what Cease got paid last year, so he probably is more 'valuable', but I guess this is where we see if Getz is a salesman or not. Thus far I'm not super impressed by that aspect of his work. Come to think of it, in retrospect that "I don't like our team" comment probably hurt the trade value of every player on the team.

After today and Eovaldi I kinda have the opposite feeling. On FG, out of the top 11 free agent starters, 7 are now signed. Last year it was obvious that Snell was going to be stuck out for a while, this year he’s already signed, and I think everyone expects Burnes to have someone meet his price. The only thing that seems like it might slow down the market might be Sasaki, but if you need reliable pitching the FA options are almost gone.

I bet Chuck is just scouring Twitter updates from legitimate MLB reporters just like we are while he’s drinking his Appletini at the bar.  🤣

I understand the hesitation as time depreciates value with these guys.   Also, the GMs that he's dealing with are  top-shelf; they probably want to rip  him off like the Dodgers/Cardinals did.

I wish the Angels or Mariners needed him.  Even Philly - Dombrowski is a top-shelf GM obviously, but he will trade.  They should at least be able to do a good volume trade with them that starts with Crawford + a couple of other prospects + a couple of prospects they get from the 3rd team who gets Bohm.  Not ideal but acceptable imv.

This is the problem I see as well. While Harold is heralding all the interest in Crochet, teams/GM's probably just want a piece of Getz. If you have a s%*# farm system and a good GM makes Crochet available, you sit it out but with Getz at the helm anything is possible!

It's certainly possible it could be like last year when people tried to wait us out, but let's also keep in mind, supply has not yet dwindled in order to truly spark demand. Fried just now signed, so likely Burnes is next and once that happens, its going to be a game of musical chairs where everyone is trying frantically to decide whether to pay alot of money for SPs with question marks (Flaherty etc) or pay prospects for good pitching or get left out in the cold.

The wheels are starting to turn so GMs now need to s%*# or get off the pot.

If you don't want to trade impact prospects then you trade for the expensive guys, I guess. Bohm, Casas or Abreu seem like a lot for Castillo unless the Ms pick up his salary. Luzardo you'd be buying low, but he wasn't very good last year. Cease we all know (if the Padres somehow get "more" than the Sox did for him this board is gonna explode). Valdez is a premium starter without a lot of control left. I could see one of Bohm, Casas or Abreu going in a trade for him. Sonny Gray is in his mid 30s and is likely in decline. I don't think he'll fetch much.

What do you mean "if" they get more? Preller's coke-driven madness cannot be stopped.

I can’t argue with your logic that the market should be there for crochet.

But, I just think that teams just don’t  want to trade their good prospects.  From their perspective, the risk > reward. If a GM doesn’t make the deal, and crochet turns out to be good and the prospects do nothing, a GM will be yapped at a little bit but it will be forgotten   If a GM makes the trade and crochet turns out to be bad and the prospects turn out to be good, a GM would be absolutely destroyed.  And I think this is true, even though the odds favor crochet being good much more than they favor the prospects end up being good.

And if you consider the teams that have successfully rebuilt, they have rebuilt through the draft and international signings. Not through dispersal trades.  The White Sox were the exception to that, but they had a lot to trade:  players who were still young and signed to long-term deals at below market prices.   A competent GM would’ve never needed to rebuild in 2016.

Teams don’t want to trade that kind of talent, but teams don’t want to have obvious rotation holes either. When they don’t have ways to fill them other than trades, they have no other choice. This market is rapidly moving in that direction.

i feel like these things even out though. We're gonna hear "expect absolute haul" and "eh go get Castillo, Valdez".

Cease was coming off a bad year, but had more track record than Crochet. Those two things cancel out perhaps. Give a little edge then to Crochet's value b/c of how little pitching is available right now.

And Cease was worth like a #60 overall and a 100ish overall, and a lotto ticket (Zavala). Crochet probably nets a little more than that. But we had all these same reports around the Cease time...certain reporters were saying there'll be a haul, other reporters were pointing out how the Marlins have pitchers that are fallbacks to Cease. So everyone has their hired guns and it's set up to even out in the end.
