Does it just make them Super 2 eligible? I know there was some reason the players pushed for this so hard. To help counter service time manipulation. But any team that signs him is going to agree to put him on the OD roster, just like Ohtani.

Iguchis been quoted a few years back as wanting to be in a Sox uniform again. What better way to celebrate the 2005 team than to have Iguchi back in uniform and bringing along the pitcher to lead the Sox to their next championship . I'm sure Sasaki must remember Iguchi fondly for trying to set up a program along with the pitching coach to both protect and strengthen him.Certainly Getz could point out how much Garrett Crochet benefitted from how the Sox handled and strengthened him as a selling point to Iguchi who would then convey it to Sasaki. Hey it's more of a connection than a lot of teams have. Yes of course… but still about a .01% chance it works.

46DidIt
Question: do I have this straight? Teams can only offer him the international allotment. They can’t tell him they’ll give him a certain contract at all? Thanks

46DidIt
It’s kind of bs he has to be subject to this, considering. I don’t think I’ve seen a Japanese league player come over yet that wasn’t at least a decent bench player. He’s obviously a major league level pro

He is then under the standard six years of control structure for any typical draftee.

The answer always seems to be that if MLB got whiff of a prior deal, they would void it and probably issue penalties on the team. If Sasaki pitched one full year, won the ROY, CY and MVP awards, and the team then decided to issue him a deal that looked like a normal deal that hiked him up from the league minimum, following an arb path, then maybe a payoff for a couple of years after scheduled free agency, that would fly. If he did okay, then they dropped a 10/300 on him, that probably wouldn't. Edited December 12 by WestEddy

While you couldn't prove that...that would be a pretty red flag and a lot of questions would get asked. That could easily be the kind of thing that ends an agents career and provokes pretty severe restrictions from MLB. They could literally void Sasaki's signing, they did something similar with a bunch of Braves prospects. If you tried to do it in Y1, MLB is going to come in asking all sorts of questions because of how weird that deal would be. You're going to sign the guy for what, 16 years and $350 million after 1 year? Think that would look a little weird? If you tried to do it in contract Y5, you're going to have to pay him a fair contract anyway, and if he wanted to say no, he's 1 year away from free agency.
WestEddy
As Roki Sasaki starts his free agency process, sources have indicated that only a few teams even have a real shot at the Japanese phenom. Some of those teams include the #Dodgers, #Padres, #Mariners, #Mets and #WhiteSox. — MLBScoops (@mlb_scoops) December 15, 2024

Sure but we do have some selling points to present if Getz chooses that path. For all we know Getz hasn't reached out to Iguchi. I don't know of any reporter who has asked him if he has yet in recent interviews during the many times he spoke at the Winter meetings. I'd be interested in knowing that. It seems like the best way to do it. Having Iguchi there representing and pumping up the Sox as a soft landing spot would be ideal.

I just don’t see how Iguchi ‘s experience almost 2 decades ago would have or should have any weight. You get to pick your team. This is rare for someone his age. You can pick a team that wins and eventually pays or, or a team that doesn’t and eventually trades you. Getz has been asked about a timeline, and he doesn’t have one. Why, if the money is around the same initially, except playing in oblivion probably hurts his off the field money, would a guy who could go anywhere, sign with a team that has no idea when or if they will good? If you recall Dylan Cease won the most money because of his 2022 season in the 1st ever pre-arbitration bonus pool based on the new CBA rules that was ratified in March 2022. Since players have 3 pre arbitration years they can technically earn extra money all 3 years based on WAR or finishing high in Cy Young and MVP voting. Julio Rodriquez and Corbin Carroll have won Multiple times and Bobby Witt just got an extra $3M . All teams throw in $1.67M into what amount to a $50M pool given to the top 100 pre arbitration players every year of the new CBA which runs through the 2026 season. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/35219927/source-dylan-cease-headlines-new-pre-arbitration-bonus-pool https://apnews.com/sports/baseball-5dc4b61e33649fa5d08e17c3de87cf67 https://apnews.com/2023-mlb-pre-arbitration-bonus-pool-e42e78b212cf3ab0b86b36f66fbaa47f Those are the list of winners from 2022, 2023 & 2024 . The 2022 is not the full list since it's just an article about Cease getting the top reward and has a cursory list of the 2022 top rewards but not the full list that the AP puts out which is what the other 2 links are for 2024 and 2023. The new list comes out every December. I see Burger got an extra $356K for his 2023 season.
