I would go out and buy at proven bat in free agency on a very short term deal.

Who? Knowing the Sox, their shopping bin probably consists of: Carlos Santana (can finish his tour of all the ALC teams), Anthony Rizzo, Joey Gallo, and like, Mark Canha. That tier of guys.

Such as?

I think he or someone else may have mentioned Joc Pederson, but he’s been good enough over the last three years to sign a short term deal with a contender.  There’s no reason for Joc to want to come to the White Sox unless they way overpaid him.

This is a very weird take.  That trade was a great move for us.

I never argued it wasn’t.  I just don’t think the Sox would get back Gavin Lux for their international slot money.  Do you think you could trade Batista for Lux?

Oh I agree, don’t think we can get Lux for $800k in bonus slot.  But I think Batista is a pretty decent prospect.

He was ranked 31st in the Dodgers farm system by FanGraphs at the time of the trade.  He was 19 and pitching in Dodgers rookie ball.  That’s just a flier with boom or bust potential, not a legitimate prospect.

Batista is now rated right ahead of #22 Jake Eder in the Sox top 30.

You're not making any case for anything by quoting arbitrary ranking numbers.  And you're not disproving that the Sox ~$850k in slot space can bring back a similar legitimate prospect. You seem to feel that unless a minor league player is ranked #1 in the game, they're worthless, which is silly.

Joc or Conforto.  Someone like that who will take two years or less.

Something like this would work for me next year:

  1. Baldwin, SS#
  2. Robert, CF
  3. Conforto, DH*
  4. Vargas, 1B
  5. Benintendi, LF*
  6. Ramos, 3B
  7. Quero, CA#
  8. Sosa, 2B
  9. Fletcher, RF*

Although admittedly Vargas at 1B / batting 4th sucks, but he’s got to play somewhere and might as well surround him with two veteran hitters.

I wouldn’t exactly call them “legitimate” prospects (just semantics I guess), but I agree that they could get back another guy like Batista.  However, I don’t agree that they could get Lux back for their international slot money.

I think the point is that you're not going to get highly touted prospects/MLB players for slot money. More lottery ticket type guys who can blow up and would you be a huge win or would fizzle out and you would forget they even had him.

This.  You worded it better than I could explain.

I seriously doubt we could get back “an A-ball position player/rotation arm PLUS Gavin Lux.”

I guess my point was not that "Yes, Lux can be had for slot space", more that - "I wouldn't give anything of value beyond slot space for Lux." He's a 2-win shortstop who's in arbitration.

That's fair. I'd trade basically a lottery ticket or two for the chance he has a good year to flip but I'm not trading anything more valuable than that. Don't really want him either.

It's such a bad concept that literally no one here would have thought of it had one of the insiders not repeatedly said it was happening.

I enjoy the irony that we know the Sox are going to trade Crochet because he will only be here for two more years [and Jerry won’t pay him], but let’s go ahead and acquire a mediocre infielder that is under contract for only two years.

This is gearing up to be yet another offseason of completely baffling moves by our wizard GM Getz.

It doesn't make any sense at all, but if you see the way GetzCo has operated over the last 16 months, you also can't say they wouldn't.  That's what is fucked up about it.

Idk. Don't get me wrong, nothing Getz has done with the roster has been great.  The Cease deal was a C+ at best.  They should have done better.  But it wasn't a complete disaster.  I hate(d) the Fedde/Kopech deal and always felt it was a good prospect short, but you have to also consider the fact that he a) signed Fedde to begin with; b) while Vargas SSS w/ Sox was an unmitigated disaster, he's probably not that bad, and you can make a decent argument that he was the highest pedigree prospect moved at the deadline; and c) Fedde probably just didn't have much value.  I also think Albertus and Perez are pretty interesting.

Nothing else he has done is really that terrible.  He's obviously overhauling the way the org is structured which is the most important long term, imo.

Now, if Getz does any of those disgustingly terrible ideas Harold claims are on the table, i'll change my tune.

Fedde was Top 15-20 in fWAR for most of the season.

Was Aroldis Chapman's value higher than that when KC pilfered Cole Ragans from the Rangers for him?

At the very least, he'd be a comparable value to Nick Martinez after his initial success out of the KBO with SD.
