I don’t think so.  The team is going to make other moves in the coming weeks and months.  Those two spots will be used soon enough and they don’t need to unnecessarily protect guys if they don’t view they as risks of being selected.  I’m not sure either of the two main relievers in question qualify as guys I’d be overly concerned about protecting.

And protecting players seems to be more an exercise of assessing the threat of them getting picked over "protecting" them. Spitballing, 10 teams will be at 40 because their systems are so awesome, and teeming with prospects. Available players are ranked. 10 other teams are good enough so they don't have to carry a guy like AHT for an entire season. The 10 teams who are a risk to pick them have so many better options missing 40-man cuts that the chance of those 2 getting selected is remote.

Now that I think about it, doesn’t the fact that they set the 40 man roster at 39 counting Slater imply that they’re both expected back? If someone was being nontendered, they could have filled an extra roster spot with one of their minor league relievers and still had a spot open for the rule 5 draft.

Do we know when the window opens to non-tender players?  Is it open now?

This is how I see it for sure.  It is essentially a gambling exercise of how much you like a guy vs his likelihood for being selected.  Pitchers definitely seem the most likely to be picked, especially if you can be stashed in the pen and brought along deliberately and quietly.

I'm sure it is, the deadline for non-tenders/arbitration offers is Friday. I'm sure all those notes will come down on Friday, since teams would hold onto most guys to see if a trade appears.

If the White Sox knew they were dropping both guys, they could have pushed their 40 man roster full right now by adding 2 of the Rule 5 protects, without Slater counted yet, then been down to 38 on Friday, then back up to 39 when Slater is finalized.

Have we seen any other non-tenders yet?

Or they could just hold the Slater announcement off until after the Rule 5 draft. They did that a few times last offseason.

Slater had two at bats in the post season.

I meant Pham. He was hitterish for KC in the playoffs. I woulda brought Pham back at 4 mill a year over Slater. Why not? Give Pham and Abreu 500 bats apiece if u sign Abreu for starters. Jose isn't gonna command more than the minimum salary either. And if the Sox go for 120 losses again he can be the guy who tells it like it is in the clubhouse saying that's unacceptable to not give 100 percent.

I figured it would be the same guaranteed amount DeJong got last year.

That’s about right.  Hopefully Getz goes after some younger DFAs on MIL deals soon as well.  There are a few semi-interesting names being dumped…

OF Brennen Davis (25, Cubs)

OF George Valera (24, Guardians)

SP Bryan Mata (25, Red Sox)

Pham finished last season with 478 plate appearances and a -0.2 WAR.  His final season line was brutal as well…

.248 .305 .368 .674

Also, his numbers with the Royals were worse than with both the Sox and Cardinals.

Pham will be 37 to start next season.  Getz will bring in enough negative WAR players on his own just like last offseason, without us giving him any suggestions.

Brennan Davis was a consensus top 20 prospect in 2022 but his numbers never really backed up the hype plus he's been injured a lot, so he fell off quickly. He can get on base and hit for power, though. You'd need to think you can develop him quickly to take a shot, as he'd require a trade most likely. Don't see the Cubs out-righting him.

Valera is in the same boat - lots of promise, lots of injuries derailing him. Same for Mata, but I think the Red Sox will resign him

Of course.  That’s why these scrubs were DFA.  They are nothing but fliers.  But I’d rather see either of those two outfielders at some point next season than 29-year old Gavin Sheets play another inning in RF.

I don't disagree with that - I'd even more rather have the return from the Crochet trade, but these are the kinds of guys you try to cycle through to see if you hit paydirt.

Agreed.  I’d rather see Getz grab as many of these guys as he can, rather than even worry about dropping a couple million on the Slater’s of the MLB.

Meh. He's a flyer type to get you the ammo to acquire guys you have faith in to develop. I'm fine with that. If Slater sucks they'll just get rid of him. The Sox could also pair a 40 man crunch guy with Slater as their RF platoon or as a 4th OF.

Fletcher or Colas should already be that guy.  May as well get some use out of them.  Although Colas seems to be despised by the Sox front office.

I think he went 3-for-3 the game I attended in the Yankee playoff series. He looked like he had a clue while most Royals hitters were abysmal.

That's true, so you don't really have much room for these guys anyway even without Slater. They should try to stash these guys at AAA instead of the Mark Paytons of the world unless/until they get rid of Beni and Robert.

They must really think Colas is worthless. They'd be better off swapping him for one of these roster crunch guys than keeping him then.

Ammo? Not sure what you mean, are you saying you think this guy could actually be traded for something useful? Or that he'll be so bad it will help their 2026 draft pick? Trying to follow the thought process here.
