Ammo? Not sure what you mean, are you saying you think this guy could actually be traded for something useful? Or that he'll be so bad it will help their 2026 draft pick? Trying to follow the thought process here.

Meaning if he's good they can trade him for something like they got for DeJong (solid low level relief prospect), or better. If he's bad they just release him.

This deal is a $1M above league minimum.  And we’re talking about a weak-side platoon OF, so it’s not like he’s even blocking any of the AAAA OF prospects we have anyways.  Honestly, this is actually a pretty solid move to potentially add some offense against LHP.  May not work out but worth the gamble at the price.

Worth more or less than Grossman, Pham, DeJong or Flexen on the trade market?

I guess it's better for Venable to have some veteran bats he trusts on the bench rather than having to rely on someone like Shewmake, Sheets, Amaya/Baldwin, etc.

Unless he's toast already...

Yeah, I'm not getting upset over Sporcle slot #12

Well, at least we know he isn't lying.

If this one goes south, we now know exactly who to blame?

Or will Ryan Fuller take the blame for making the recommendation, like Tosar/Vargas...?

And now? Miguel (Vargas) has carved his own path to baseball stardom, and his father could not be more proud.

“He’s definitely better than me,” Lazaro said. “He has better tools than I had. He hits more than me, he runs faster than I did, and he’s so much stronger than I was.”

Miguel wanted to show off his speed despite the field conditions and he ended up pulling a hamstring in the process. He still impressed the Dodgers with his tools and desire.

“He was hitting balls into a house,” Tosar recalled. “We couldn’t really get the distance, so we went on a distance-tracking app through GPS. We saw home plate, we saw the roof and where the ball hit and we marked it and it was over 400-something feet. He must’ve been 17 at the time. It was legit.”

At the time the Dodgers only had $300,000 to offer Miguel because they had exceeded their spending total internationally the year before. That amount was below what he was hoping to sign for, and the Dodgers knew he was worth more than that.

Fringe players have been signing later than other players for the last five off seasons. Yet the White Sox, regardless of whose in charge, continue to overpay and over committ to these kind of players year sfter year.

Top target last season, Martin Maldonado. This off season, Austin slater. These guys are probably so hyped when their agents told them we've got early offer.

We are coming off the worst season in baseball history and have been lambasted in the press since it ended.  We clearly will have to overpay to land free agents.  In this case, we’re talking paying a $1M above league minimum for a role player that our new hitting coordinator just worked with and probably feels is undervalued and potentially a good clubhouse fit.  Who really cares if he was our “top target” for a weak-side platoon OF on cheap?  I will happily criticize Getz for many of things, but this is a big nothing in the grand scheme of things.

I also put little weight into what a team tells a player when they sign him. It goes back to teams picking a guy 15th in the draft and saying they would take him number 1.

That’s generally true, but in this case, I think Getz wanted to add a veteran RH OF to help against LHP (since all our OFs except Robert are LH) and didn’t want to spend big on it.  As such, Slater became the “top target” for this very small, specialized role.  But no doubt there is a sales element at play here as well that people are latching onto due to their frustration with the org.

No GM should have to say such a thing to a veteran scrub who put up a .586 OPS and -0.2 WAR last year.  It just proves more of the same from last offseason — that Getz values bad players.

That negative WAR sure looks familiar to most of the players he acquired last year.

You’re whining about their sales pitch now?  If you don’t like the player that’s totally fine, but if Getz wants the dude then he should 100% say this s%*# if it will help get the deal done.  Not sure how that’s even debatable.

Disagree. No fringe player needs a premium to sign anywhere.

The White Sox have misread the market every year since the rebuild started. A move like this just solidifies that they still have no grasp on market moves and player values.

Also, why is a hitting coordinator making personnel decisions? Jesus Christ.

Find another fringe player who signed in the last decade and is quoted as saying "they told me I was their primary/top target" or anything of the sorts. Come on man, what are we doing here?

Again, we are talking about a guy signing for a $1M above league minimum for a weak-side platoon OF role.  The max we could save by waiting is literally a $1M.  If your new hitting coordinator feels he can return to 85% of previous form, then paying a tiny amount of money to secure your dude now makes more sense than settling for whatever scraps remain at the end of offseason.

Come on Ray, this isn’t that hard.  They called him up early in free agency and made him an offer.  Clearly he was their top target for this role.  Who cares if they said that out loud to him?

It would be a sign of a horrible leader if Getz didn't get input from valued members of his coaching and development squad.

Seriously, can you tell us of any GM who has all the answers and doesn't even confer with his scouts to get feedback on players? LOL.

And seriously, Fuller making the "personal decisions" would look something like Fuller calling a press conference and announcing a signing that he made on his own, and Getz saying he had no idea what was happening.

I actually think this is their top free agent target overall, not just for this role. I think every other signing is a MiLB deal.

I highly doubt they don’t sign at least one other major league contract.  I’m not expecting anything crazy, but they almost certainly will do a couple dumpster dives to fill out the roster at minimum.
