Austin Slater Signed to MLB Deal

I highly doubt they don’t sign at least one other major league contract.  I’m not expecting anything crazy, but they almost certainly will do a couple dumpster dives to fill out the roster at minimum.

Idk having so many young guys that should be playing every day, I feel like any vet is a minor league deal fighting for a bench/bullpen role. Maybe a couple SP on minor league deals with the promise of making the club.

I’m expecting an uninspiring but necessary SP signing ala Flexen to eat innings.

I think they will add least one reliever on a guaranteed deal.  And they may need a DH / 1B depending on how non-tenders go and who they get back in a Crochet trade.

You’re whining about their sales pitch now?  If you don’t like the player that’s totally fine, but if Getz wants the dude then he should 100% say this s%*# if it will help get the deal done.  Not sure how that’s even debatable.

I just think it’s sad.  Slater will be yet another guy that will be lucky to finish the season as a White Sox.  Chances are he will be DFA and playing for another team before the end of the season and we will be trying to forget he ever existed.

I actually think this is their top free agent target overall, not just for this role. I think every other signing is a MiLB deal.

I think they will spend more on pitching but I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the biggest bat they sign.  Getz still has to try to prove out that the bums he acquired last year (Vargas and Fletcher) are major leaguers.

As opposed to doing what exactly?

There was quote from Getz earlier this offseason that basically said anything they spend would likely be geared to the offense.  I could still one C tier bat added to the mix on a short term deal.  But again, depends on if they bring back Vaughn for one last hoorah.

In the future?  By not acquiring horrible players in the first place.  But obviously it’s too late for Getz to undo his bad moves from last year and he has to play these bums.

It would be a sign of a horrible leader if Getz didn't get input from valued members of his coaching and development squad.

Seriously, can you tell us of any GM who has all the answers and doesn't even confer with his scouts to get feedback on players? LOL.

And seriously, Fuller making the "personal decisions" would look something like Fuller calling a press conference and announcing a signing that he made on his own, and Getz saying he had no idea what was happening.

Eddy, I actually follow the game very closely outside the White Sox.

More successful franchises aren't having their GM constantly cite coaches for acquisition reasons. What does Fuller know about player development and growth? His job is to develop not chose who to develop.

Admitting a mistake and moving on?

Moving on from Vargas would be premature. You have to give him a year. Fletcher is whatever. Probably destined to be a platoon player, but it would be dumb to move on from him too right now because what is taking his place? If you get tour RF of the future in the Crochet trade than sure.

Austin Hays about to be non-tendered. Hays as a starting right fielder with occasional starts from either DeLoach or Fletcher and Slater platooning with Benny would be a reasonable outfield, methinks.

Kind of surprised no one took a chance on him.

Hays also won’t accept being a platoon OF either.

Uh, okay.  Who do the Sox have in RF that would be a clear starter over Austin Hays?  The Sox could easily sign that person if they wanted to.  But Getz chose to dumpster dive for a cheap platoon outfielder.

Clear starter?  No one, but for a rebuilding team coming off a historically bad season and in desperate need of some building blocking?  Fletcher, the guy you were super excited about when Getz first acquired him and thought he could be an Eaton clone.  Or DeLoach, a guy you said you could be a LH RF power bat for us.  Why do you want to block these guys in a season where winning doesn’t matter when they liked as recently as a year ago?  Just for the possibility of Hays rebounding and you can flip him at the deadline for something more valuable?

I wouldn’t be completely against a Hays move if they plan rotate some of the OFs through the DH spot, but the original point was if you’re Getz and you’re looking to supplement Fletcher & DeLoach or whomever we get in a Crochet trade (and not replace them) then Slater on the cheap is a more realistic move as Hays won’t want to fill that role in the first place.

"Easily".
