Or

When given a choice between Player A and Player B in the last 1.5 years, we chose the wrong player.  But sure.  You keep plugging away.

Man, learn to take a joke. Or just say what you actually mean if you can't see the joke inherent in Nicky Lopez being anyone's favorite player.

Abreu at league minimum or Vaughn at about $6M? Idk I think I would prefer non-tendering Vaughn, sign Abreu to MiLB deal, and look for someone more interesting to play at 1B on a MLB deal.

Or just move Vargas to 1B and play Ramos at 3B.

I actually wouldn’t be too surprised if this happened.  Jerry loves Abreu and cheap contracts.  Getz just signed 32-year old Slater already.  Seems pretty obvious that dumpster diving for vets is still #1 on Getz’s offseason plan, just like last year.

Looks like another 120-loss season.

Look I get that we aren't spending this winter, and I totally understand why, but if we are going to dumpster dive can we try to make it someone who could have actual trade value and not just a roster spot?

Agreed.  Getz should be trying to acquire as many one time good prospects in their mid-20’s as possible, not 32-year old Austin Slater’s.

I just don't think Abreu would want to be on another losing team, he did that with the Sox already. He made his fortune, unless he just desperately wants to play and will do that with anyone who gives him a chance, but you'd think he would go to a contender if he had the option.

It's hard for me to put much stock in winter league numbers, especially after the season Abreu had. I wish Pito the best, but I'd be leery of giving him a Major League deal.

A minor league deal with an invite to spring training would be my setup. Doesn't take up a roster spot, leaves you the option of finding someone better (say, in a Robert or Crochet deal, or as a free agent in February or March).

Basically for me, the motivation is not having Abreu around, it's using him as an excuse to not pay Vaughn in arbitration. If they're chopping the payroll down to $80 million or less, whatever their motivation for doing so is, then spending $6.4 million on Vaughn just isn't smart money any more.  He isn't playing up to that, and if he were to break out with the White Sox this season (which seems admittedly unlikely), he's not going to be worth enough in a trade to justify the money spent on him given they have limited control left of him and he has a long history of struggles.

If the payroll is being slashed, then slash it.

Then Jose Abreu won't be playing in the big leagues at least to start the year. Obvious contenders might be willing to try him out on their AAA team to start the year, but he will not be their option 1 or 2.

IF he wants a team that could give him a reasonable shot to break camp in the big leagues, that's the White Sox. If things go well for him in the first half, he might play on a contender after the trade deadline anyway, but he'd have to show that he can hit big league pitching again first.

How many great teams are going to want him?

I have no idea. I also said contending, not great. Contending could literally mean any team that is projected to be a few games over .500.

If we're going to lose, let's lose with guys that play hard and are likable.

Eventually he should be allowed to sign a one day contract if he wants and retire as a White Sox.

It's a 6 game sample size.I wonder if the Sox even have  scout there watching games.

If they do, I'm sure there are younger players to scout.

I hope the Fuller hire doesn't mean it's another coach taking a crack at Vaughn and Sheets. Send them packing and use the $8M somewhere else.

Abreu " signing imminent " sounds like BS based on sample sIze.

Wait. Are there people who actually want to bring him back and are not joking?

I'm not joking. How have young players are we going to rush their development because we don't have anyone else? He's easy to root for.

What young players would be rushed if he isn't on the team? Tim Elko who is already 25? Andrew Vaughn will put up better numbers than whatever Jose Abreu would put up this year.

Andrew Vaughn will also cost $6.4 million this year give or take, based on arbitration estimates. That's 10% of their currently committed salary for a guy who seemingly doesn't have a future with this team and who seemingly won't bring back anything of value in a trade.
