Hmmm.  The Sox already do a good job of preventing runs.  Oh wait, preventing runs by the OTHER team.  That makes more sense.

They need to limit the opposing team to one run to have a chance with their lineup.  Hopefully this guy is that damn good.

The Brewers are a team that the Sox should be modeling themselves after. So this is a good move.

I wonder if Renteria and Napoli join the staff in some capacity. Those are his boys.

With this guy being in charge of the Brewers daily game planning, it hammers home something that Getz and Fuller have been hammering on in all of their media appearances, the need to get better at game planning. Makes you wonder what Grifol was providing to the guys on a daily basis, but this has to be a long stemming problem for the team.

Coworker has a friend who played in the Sox org a few years ago.  Didn't make it past A league before hanging it up but pretty much said the Pitching Coaches he worked with told him to spin the ball on breaking stuff and "just throw strikes".  They used no current data and were stuck in 1975.

Good to see Getz putting together something new.

Good positive observation .

Interesting that Venable was the one to make the announcement via web-based daily baseball talk show Foul Territory.

McKinven is a Chicago-area native and graduate of New Trier High School in suburban Winnetka. A former pitcher in independent-league ball, McKinven joined the Brewers organization in 2016 as an advance video scout. He worked his way up from there, officially joining the uniformed coaching staff in 2020. By 2021, he had been promoted to associate pitching, catching and strategy coach, where he played an integral role in day to day game planning and catching defense. Brewers backstops including Omar Narváez and William Contreras took major strides defensively under the guidance of McKinven.

Last season, McKinven was given the title of run-prevention coordinator.

When there were pitching decisions to be made, McKinven would not be found too far from Pat Murphy and pitching coach Chris Hook.

McKinven becomes the second departure from last season’s major-league coaching staff this offseason. First base coach Quintin Berry previously joined former Brewers manager Craig Counsell’s staff on the Chicago Cubs.

Quote

Pat Murphy on Foul Territory today speaking to the loss of Walker McKinven:

"Yeah, Walker is magnificent.

He's been behind the scenes for a long time. Since we put him on the field and in the dugout, he's continued to make strides. He's not that young, but he seems young, looks young. He really understands that Major League game. He's a ruthless decision maker. He's got a lot of great talents. And i love Will. Being around Will for a year, I love him.

I think that combination is going to be lethal. I think the White Sox are moving in the right direction for sure. It's gonna hurt us, no question. Walk only has nine fingers, so we will be able to get a ten-fingered guy in there. It'll... be a great challenge to replace

I did not expect to learn one of these details.
