One also has proven to be a well below average major hitter over 1,400+ plate appearances.  Give the me the mystery box over the guy we already know is bad.

You mean our statuesque DH that has a career OPS almost as low as Neifi Perez’s?  Please don’t tell me someone is arguing to bring Sheets back…

If the Sox don’t tender Sheets (I’ll believe it when I see it) someone will have to check on Schriffen. Losing Lopez and Sheets in a month, the guy will probably be curled up somewhere.

Standing up too fast makes some people dizzy....he's gonna need a lie down

It would be crazy for a team in what's essentially the first year of a rebuild to give up on a top 5 pick a few years into his career, especially with a new staff and hitting instructor coming in.

Vaughn?  It’s his 5th full year.  And even last year when he fixed his launch angle issues and hit more fly balls it didn’t really matter because of terrible swing decisions.  I doubt a new hitting coach will be able to stop him from chasing shitty pitches all the time.

Personally, I'd keep Vaughn, because the other options are

  1. Miguel Vargas: If a hitting instructor can fix this, he can definitely fix Vaughn.
  2. Tim Elko: I'd like to see him get a shot, but I'd also like to see a bit more time at AAA, considering the nature of the Charlotte bandbox.
  3. Oscar Colas: I'm pretty sure the org would rather trade Colas to the NPB for literally nothing than play him, because they somehow think he's multitudes worse than Fletcher/DeLoach/Vargas.

So why still hold onto Colas at this point...just as a backup to your backup plan?  It's not like Getz signed him.

Considering our top free agent priority was a 32-year-old outfielder coming off his worst season, I'd personally just set Colas free. They are determined to not let him play. They would put Vargas, Amaya or Steve Wilson in centerfield before letting Colas get consistent reps.

So they're "teaching him a lesson" somehow, still?  It's the only thing that makes sense...just barely.  At least the way the Sox operate with grudges, such as the Giolito union rep theory.

Or simply managers wanting to play "trusted" vets over younger players.

The only thing that (sort of, in their eyes) makes sense is he was originally punished for not listening to coaching and then continued to do that.
