Not likely. It takes way more than a "lack of talent" to lose 120 games. Teams full of AAA caliber players usually still win in the upper 40s, you need real dysfunction on top of a lack of talent to pull off what happened last year.

Ah well we should still have plenty of disfunction.

Assuming Venable is better than Pedro, which isn't a stretch, you're probably right. But if anyone could put a worse team on the field than 2024, its Chris Getz.

I would be really impressed if the Sox could manage to be the worst team in the history of baseball in back to back years.

I love the idea of the 2024 team popping champagne when the 2025 team finishes with a worse record.

It's gonna happen then JR will cut payroll in 2026.   Then there will be charges against Reinsdorf for violating minimum wage laws.

I think if they trade Crochet and to a certain extent Robert the team will win in the 40s again. Loss of Crochet will guarantee a lot more games the Sox won't be competitive in. Robert is no good but he the best of our lineup. It's hard to put together a worse everyday lineup than the Sox project to be in 2025. And the pitching staff a bunch of no names, although some of the up and comers are supposed to be good. ... Like last year, no aspect of the team, pitching, hitting or D projects to be above average.

I suspect JR is prepping the club for sale by not having burdensome contracts, etc.  That would be fine and I hope he finds a whale.   When JR hired Getz, his comments indicated he was fast-tracking our return to respectability by hiring from inside the organization.  That doesn't square with no interest in free agents...just trades for prospects.  JR doesn't have 10 more years to be patient, and neither do I.

Prepping the team for sale makes sense but it won't happen by JR, his family will sell it when he is gone.

I think it will happen sooner.  The WS can't run these 50 million payrolls for long before killing the golden goose.  I'm already considering the cancellation of my MLB.TV subscription.  I'm a glutton for punishment but this is not "entertaining" to watch.

They will be running $50 million payrolls until Jerry meets his maker.

As I have explained in stories the capital gains tax hit on a sale of the club while JR is alive could be in the range of 200 million dollars and that is not counting the Illinois state tax hit.

JR started his professional career working for the IRS. Those numbers have real meaning to him which is why on the rare occasions he has spoken publicly about it, his message has been the same, he's told his family to keep the Bulls and sell the Sox when he is gone.

Times and thoughts change.  I think Jerry is selling in the not-to-distant future.  Owning a team is an ego thing for some of his investors.  This can't be good for their egos.  I currently take a lot of ribbing from my circle of friends.  Can you imagine what it's like for actual owners?

The 2025 White Sox could be worse than the 2024 White Sox team. But with a low payroll this will be one of the most profitable teams in MLB.

I doubt the shareholders care all that much. The Sox have been on the downslide since winning the WS. in 2013, when the team was on its way to its worst season in over 40 years, board members were saying "let Jerry handle things." Well, he is still handling things and another 100-loss season is coming.

Not a lot of organizations in sports history have been able to hang back to back banners!

He does not own 100% of the team, so his hit would be normal where near that amount.

I don't know how that may or may not apply all I could do is go by what I was told by the tax consultant that I asked regarding this situation.

No one went broke paying taxes on profits.

Of course he could sell for $600mil and save a ton in taxes

True but consider the source, his history and his philosophy of "I win, you lose" (for example the sweetheart lease agreement with the stadium or his demand for more tax payer money for another one)

His ego may simply not allow him to want to pay ANY taxes.

He didn't form a charity to buy the team.

He didn't add it to a collection.

He has bought and (leased back) or sold property to build his personal fortune. He put together a group of investors to buy the team as an investment.
