Andrew Benintendi on the trade market (duh)

True but consider the source, his history and his philosophy of "I win, you lose" (for example the sweetheart lease agreement with the stadium or his demand for more tax payer money for another one)

His ego may simply not allow him to want to pay ANY taxes.

Fine, think through to the next step.

Reinsdorf doesn’t want to pay taxes. What is one other thing where keeping the payroll ultra low will be important? Franchise relocation.

Reinsdorf started meeting with Nashville and threatening to move before they went public with the 78 plans, and practically every time he speaks now he talks about how he can’t afford to compete in this spot. It’s clearly at the forefront of his thinking.

In the 80s the only reason that he got his sweetheart ballpark deal was that he was 100% ready to move to Tampa Bay and the politicians capitulated 2 hours after the last minute.

I don’t know if he’s more determined to move this time, he might be, I think he truly hates this fanbase. But if he’s not, he still thinks that the only way to bully the state into the same sweetheart deal as last time is to be ready to move again. Look at his own behavior, the threat of move arcane first and its the only point he’s made.

That means super low payrolls, no long term contracts, lots of losing so attendance stays low. If attendance collapses because the fans know they’re leaving, or they have to spend a season at Nashville’s AAA park, he can’t have a big salary to pay. The team has to look like it’s in as bad of a spot as Oakland. It’s literally the “Major League” movie strategy. Which sets them up to follow the As story if the politicians don’t gift him the most expensive stadium in MLB.

He has never threatened to move. He said when he dies, his son may have to sell to outsiders because they may be worth more somewhere else. It won’t happen.

I don't know how that may or may not apply all I could do is go by what I was told by the tax consultant that I asked regarding this situation.

It's not that complex.  He is thought to own somewhere around 20% of the team.  His tax hit will be a small fraction of whatever the final sale price is as he only owns a small fraction of the team.

No he said it would be worth more somewhere else, not it May. He then said that was totally not a threat to leave. And then said “I reject the idea that it was a mistake to bring Tony LaRussa back.”

Andrew Benintendi isn't good but I don't see why we should be looking to move him. He is going to cost assets to move and we aren't going to get anything back.

You guys okay giving up a prospect to move him? I am not. We should be looking to take on salary for prospects not shed them for it.

Jerry seemingly will value dumping the contract over the value of any prospects...in the past when taking subsidies for players like Thome and Shields (when we were actually competing), even then the priority was on saving money over talent return.

Same with international draft money over recent seasons...

Just a few thoughts:

TLR on the radio publicly said last month that JR is not moving the franchise.

MLB could get up to two billion dollars from an expansion team in Nashville according to a story in Sports Illustrated. If that is true, and I have no idea if it is, they aren't going to kill to Golden Goose by allowing the Sox to move there.

I do agree with you, JR hates this fan base because they never really swallowed his BS from the beginning.

Honestly if Jerry wanted to move the Sox would love it, because someone would absolutely pay the expansion franchise fee to be Chicago's 2nd team.

What makes you so sure Chicago would get another expansion team? Houston is going to pass Chicago in population in the next decade, or so, and nobody is talking about a 2nd team for Houston.

If Texas gets another team they will complete the triangle.  Plus when it comes to metro areas Chicago is much bigger.

I think IllinoisPolicy.org is a conservative front group, so I take what they say with a grain of salt, but they're estimating that the Houston metro area will surpass the Chicago metro area in 2035. And Dallas/Ft. Worth is larger than Houston.

MLB will want to expand again.
